山の手の高台に名物のどじょう店がある。帳場には女学校を出て間もないくめ子が、病弱の母に代わって坐っている。夜になるといつも、老齢の彫金師の徳永がどじょう汁をおずおずと頼みにくる。支払いが滞る徳永に店の者は邪険にするのだが、母親の若い時代から心の交流があったことをしみじみ語る徳永に、くめ子は一碗のいのちの汁を差し出すのだった（『家霊』）。美しい川の畔に住む深窓の乙女は、川への憧れ、思慕、追憶がいつも心にあった。下男の直助は、彼女に一途に仕えながらも、心の底では思慕の情を抱いている。やがて彼女は青年画家のもとに嫁いでいったのだが・・・（『川』）。（C）2016 響林社
