 室生犀星は、「ふるさとは遠きにありて思ふもの」の詩で著名だが、生まれ育ちが複雑で、私生児として生まれ、間もなく近くの寺に引き取られて育てられた。1902年に高等小学校を３年で中退して、金沢地方裁判所に給仕として就職し、上司の俳人たちに手ほどきを受けて文学に親しむようになった。1909年に裁判所を退職し、翌1910年に上京して、根津、千駄木、谷中に住んだ。
　作家として認められたのが、1919年に発表した自伝的作品三部作「幼年時代」「性に目覚める頃」とこの「或る少女の死まで」によってであるが、それは、この1909年の千駄木、谷中時代の出来事を描いている。
　千駄木の小さい酒場に通っていたが、そこに痩せた12,3歳の少女がいた。母親は彼女を産み落とすとすぐ行方不明となったのだが、酒場の女将に引き取られいつも叱られていたが、可憐な微笑、泣き笑いする目の自然さ、ぼおっとした中にある清純さにいつも惹き付けられていた。
　他方、自分はその酒場での喧嘩騒ぎに巻き込まれ、警察署での聴取、相手との示談などで、心は重く沈んでしまった。が、少女と話すと純な感情になれた。谷中の高台にある離れに越したところ、母親と10歳ほどの女の子の家族も住んでいた。女の子は品のある顔立ちで可愛らしかった。そのふじ子との日常的な交流は、金沢に一度戻るまでの数か月間続いた。動物園にも一緒に行った。いつもボンタンという愛称で可愛がった。
　しかし、バーの少女は病に侵され、ふじ子もまた・・・。犀星の喪失感と哀悼の気持ちがにじみ出ている。
