新婚２週間もたたないうちに、家庭争議の素が舞い込んできた。「第３者としての一女性」という妙な差出人からの手紙であった。読めば、学生時代の友人に結婚を勧められた女学生、”岡アイコ”の知り合いらしい女性からだった。もう８年も前のことなのだが、岡アイコは、私の結婚申し込みを断っておきながら、私のことが気になって仕方がなかったという。その時のお詫びと気持ちの整理に本人がお訪ねしたい、と言うのだそうである。探偵社を使って私の消息を調べたそうだが、その調査内容のなんと正確なこと！
かつて結婚まで考えた、「厭でない女」が自分を訪ねてくるという申し出に、私はどこかそわそわ、ドキドキ。慌てて隠したはずの手紙も勘の鋭い妻にあっさりと見つかってしまい、遂に彼女ははやってきた・・・。
「そんな最近に結婚したくらいの男は、厭でない女といっしょに歩くことなど大好き」――と書く井伏鱒二独特のユーモアが滲み出る作品。滋味深い男ごころをさらりと描く。
