About this listen

According to the CDC and WHO, 1 in 3 American men will experience physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Globally, 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence—most often at the hands of an intimate partner.

Domestic violence isn’t always visible. Beyond physical and sexual abuse, it often includes emotional abuse, psychological manipulation, financial abuse, coercive control, and legal abuse—tactics designed to isolate, intimidate, and silence victims.

I’m Ingrid Dutton, intimate partner violence and non-fatal strangulation survivor. On 1 in 3, I speak openly about the realities of domestic abuse and intimate partner violence, from covert control to court-enabled abuse. Every week, I share real survivor stories, expert interviews, and conversations that bring truth to the experiences so many endure in silence.

  • Raise awareness and education around all forms of domestic abuse
  • Support victims, survivors, and families

  • Court, Protective Orders & Keeping Kids Safe with Attorney, Meg Groff I Ep. 115
    Apr 15 2026

Family court is often where survivors turn for protection—but it can also be where abuse continues in new ways.

In this episode of 1 in 3, Ingrid sits down with Attorney Meg Groff to break down what survivors are really up against when navigating the legal system. • The high-risk separation period and how abusers use the court system
    • How state laws define abuse differently (and why it matters)

  • Life After Abuse: Domestic Violence Survivors, Trauma, and Healing with Deonna Kay I Ep. 113
    Apr 1 2026

Many domestic violence stories end with escape and a clean “happily ever after.” Real survivor experiences are often far more complex.

In this episode of 1 in 3, Ingrid speaks with author Deanna Kay about her debut novel The Measure of Enough and the real-world survivor experiences that shaped its story. The conversation explores why emotional scars can remain long after safety is rebuilt — and why honest representation of abuse in fiction matters for awareness, education, and empathy.

    Discussion includes:

    • Hidden forms of domestic violence and coercive control
    • Emotional, verbal, physical, and sexual abuse beyond common stereotypes
    • Early warning signs like isolation, manipulation, and control
    • How abuse can remain invisible inside “perfect” families
    • Supporting someone experiencing abuse without accusation
    • Body image, eating disorders, and vulnerability in controlling relationships
    • Writing, publishing, rejection, and telling survivor-centered stories responsibly

Set against a Texas backdrop, The Measure of Enough follows Casey, a young social worker confronting family secrets and misinformation — opening a broader conversation about perception, trauma, and healing.
