Before we move forward, let’s do a checkpoint and go back in time a little bit.
Most histories of quantum mechanics take us to Berlin in 1900 and introduce us to Max Planck. That is where the familiar story begins. Planck is struggling with blackbody radiation, the mathematics refuses to cooperate with classical physics, and he finally proposes that energy comes in discrete packets, quanta.
That is a perfectly good place to start.
But I want to rewind the clock a few years and travel from Berlin to Paris.
Because before Planck could begin rebuilding physics, someone had to help show that the old picture of matter was already falling apart.
So let’s spend a few minutes with Mrs. Curie.
Or, as she would eventually become known, La Dame du Radium.
