  • David Bowie Part Four
    Oct 19 2026

The eighties open with Bowie in Clown mode. A chance encounter on a beach has brought on introspection and he decides

to drop the clown and go for full on rockstar status.

    Was this a good move?

The following decade sees lower output in terms of albums but a massive increase in workload, fame and income.

Kevin reflects on the change in direction and Steve reassesses the general opinion that not much of this was very good.

  • Frank Sidebottom and John Shuttleworth
    Oct 12 2026

Do you love the bossa nova preset of the Yamaha PSS-680? Do you spend endless nights colouring in bits of old cardboard with felt tips? Perhaps you feel the music industry is fundamentally unfair and there is no sane explanation of the top 40?

If you have not done so already, take refuge in the world of John Shuttleworth and shed of Frank Sidebottom. Who lives near Altrincham and has met Mark Radcliffe, y' know, that bloke off the radio.

Kevin and Dave discuss the origins and careers of these eccentric and to some baffling comic creations (proper Marmite). There is even a stab at 'meaning', but you could skip that bit at the end and go listen to "I Can't Go Back to Savoury Now" and "Anarchy in Timperley", for starters.

  • The Fall in 6 Albums
    Oct 5 2026

Not known for being angry, 5282 returns to discuss one of the angriest bands in the UK, fronted by a charismatic by flawed lead singer.

The Fall formed in the turbulence of 1976 and thundered through numerous lineups, shifts in tone and various degrees of baffling. Mark E Smith became a legend of UK punk. Domineering, egotistical and controlling were just some of his good points. He also had a dark side but once seen live you would not forget him.

With over 30 studio albums, their discography is swelled by numerous live recordings, reissues, box sets and of course bootlegs. But do you take Kevins side, and think you need to have them all?

Or can Steve convince you to listen to just our six? For starters anyway.

  • ITC Television Shows
    Aug 3 2026

ITC was a producer of quality television throughout the sixties and seventies. Featuring famous and breaking acting talent, quality screenwriters and a filmic eye for TV presentation, ITC created such iconic titles as The Saint, The Champions and Jason King. Which three titles will the regular hosts pick as their favourites? Is there any chance Kevin owns an ITC box set? And can Dave pronounce Riviera?

This is the last episode of series five. We will return in October with a bit of something to please most people. Unless a rogue AI infiltrates our system and churns out ten generic episodes on The Clangers.

  • Borges and Magical Realism
    Jul 27 2026

Jorge Luis Borges. Argentinian poet, essayist and short story writer prolific from the 1920s onwards. Extraordinarily influential even though he wasn't widely known to north American or European readers until 1961. Also connected to the literary genre of 'Magical Realism' (M.R.). But was he a magical realist? And just what is M.R.?

Dave leads the discussion and uses "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" as an example of how tricky pinning down both M.R.and Borges is.

We can't even say if the moon is really there if you are not looking at it, that's how bad it gets. No wonder Kevin was nonplussed.

Complicating matters (yes, really) is that we originally planned this to be one episode with two topics, Borges, and El Pampero Cine. Both recorded on the same day, we are publishing both as separate episodes. Offering you sort of listen to one, get another one .... to listen to.

And to think, I used to work in marketing.......

  • El Pampero Cine
    Jul 27 2026

El Pampero Cine, the Argentine film collective, formed in Buenos Aires by Laura Citarella, Mariano Llinás, Agustín Mendilaharzu, and Alejo Moguillansky, has been honing its unique cinematic voice since 2002. Without a shadow of a doubt, the foursome have delivered a compelling body of work, including their take on The Little Match Girl, the two-part Trenque Lauquen and La Flor, which clocks in at a staggering 808 minutes. Phil, Kevin and Dave take a closer look at their brand of independent cinema, while trying their level best to get the pronunciations right. Will they succeed?
