  • Medtronic: A Smaller Company. A Stronger Investment? | EP027
    Oct 21 2026
Medtronic completed the MiniMed separation on 15 October 2026. Does a more focused company offer a stronger investment case? This conversation examines procedure growth, cash conversion and the evidence behind the dated model view.Research basis and the business after MiniMedResearch as of 21 October 2026. Medtronic plc ordinary shares: MDT.NYSE, USD, ISIN IE00BTN1Y115. Read the asset’s Medtronic Consensus research and twenty-quarter forecast for the underlying dated research. The released September labels are Buy at both 1Y and 5Y, including and excluding dividends, on the original USD 92.13 reference dated 18 September 2026. They are not a new rating computed at this episode’s reference price. The 14 October final exchange results specify 252,813,348 MiniMed shares exchanged for 55,032,401 Medtronic ordinary shares. Medtronic confirmed completion on 15 October. This was a split-off exchange by participating shareholders, not a cash sale or an automatic pro-rata distribution to every holder. Formally, a spin-off distributes subsidiary shares while a split-off exchanges parent shares; the conversational opening uses spins-off broadly for divestment, not as a technical definition of a cash sale. Medtronic no longer retains a MiniMed interest. Share retirement and removal of diabetes earnings must be assessed together with transition costs. The continuing device businesses span cardiovascular, neuroscience and surgical technology. Examples include Micra pacemakers, Evolut valves, Affera mapping and ablation, and Hugo robotic assistance. Clinical approval, payer coverage, installation and actual instrument use are different milestones.Four financial findingsThe financial checks use the FY2026 full-year results, first-quarter FY2027 release and quarterly SEC Form 10-Q for 31 July 2026. These consolidated periods precede the completed separation.* Earnings and sales: Q1 FY2027 revenue was USD 9.756 bn, up 13.7% reported and 13.7% on the company’s organic definition. The extra fiscal week contributed an estimated USD 570 m; the organic measure does not remove it. Subtracting that estimated benefit suggests roughly 7% underlying organic growth. The next normal-length quarters are a more useful test than extrapolating 13.7%.* Profitability: FY2026 GAAP operating profit was USD 6.467 bn with a 17.8% margin, essentially flat year over year. Q1 FY2027 GAAP operating profit was USD 1.764 bn and margin 18.1%; adjusted operating profit was USD 2.316 bn and margin 23.7%. Portfolio simplification and procedural mix offer scope for improvement, not a guaranteed margin jump.* Balance sheet: At 31 July 2026, cash USD 1.691 bn plus investments USD 7.128 bn totaled USD 8.819 bn. Current debt USD 2.536 bn plus long-term debt USD 25.617 bn totaled USD 28.153 bn. Goodwill USD 43.187 bn and other intangible assets USD 10.238 bn are substantial. These are dated pre-separation consolidated balances, not a post-split recast or an assurance of dividend safety.* Investment intensity: FY2026 property-and-equipment additions were USD 1.904 bn, or 5.2359% of USD 36.364 bn sales. The maintenance/growth split is unavailable. Research and acquisitions are additional uses of capital. The quarterly filing also reports approximately USD 700 m paid for the Cornerstone Robotics investment during Q2 FY2027. Judge returns on total investment, not factory capex alone. One cash bridge, with historical contextFY2026 operating cash USD 7.330 bn − property-and-equipment additions USD 1.904 bn = company-defined free cash flow USD 5.426 bn. Dividends used USD 3.639 bn; buybacks USD 1.035 bn and acquisitions net of cash acquired USD 0.406 bn were separate uses. FCF is a flow, not cash held at the balance-sheet date. A trailing calculation through Q1 FY2027 is USD 5.426 bn + USD 1.290 bn − USD 0.584 bn = USD 6.132 bn; it still includes diabetes and calendar effects, so it is not an unqualified post-separation run rate. The five-year chart uses comparable company-defined annual FCF from the FY2023 release and comparative cash-flow schedules and FY2026 comparative cash-flow schedules. All years below include the diabetes business; fiscal years are not calendar years.* Fiscal year: FY2022; Operating cash (USD bn): 7.346; PP&E additions (USD bn): 1.368; FCF = operating cash − PP&E (USD bn): 5.978* Fiscal year: FY2023; Operating cash (USD bn): 6.039; PP&E additions (USD bn): 1.459; FCF = operating cash − PP&E (USD bn): 4.580* Fiscal year: FY2024; Operating cash (USD bn): 6.787; PP&E additions (USD bn): 1.587; FCF = operating cash − PP&E (USD bn): 5.200* Fiscal year: FY2025; Operating cash (USD bn): 7.044; PP&E additions (USD bn): 1.859; FCF = operating cash − PP&E (USD bn): 5.185* Fiscal year: FY2026; Operating cash (USD bn): 7.330; PP&E additions (USD bn): 1.904; FCF = operating cash − PP&E (USD bn): 5.426Reference price, scenarios and dividend cashThe recording reference is USD 94.645: Alpaca IEX last available trade on 20 October 2026 at ...

  • Northrop Grumman: Record Backlog, Tough Delivery | EP026
    Oct 20 2026
Northrop Grumman: Record Backlog, Tough Delivery | EP026AI Investment Edge: Stocks, Markets & Money · Research checked 20 October 2026.Northrop’s record order book answers one question: customers want its systems. The harder investment question is how much becomes profitable delivery and cash after contract costs, factory investment and working capital.Explore the dated Northrop Grumman research at iPulse AI.Dated model view: The released September research assigned Buy at both its one-year and five-year horizons, with fixed endpoints 18 September 2027 and 18 September 2031. These are the ORIGINAL, non-adjusted rating labels on the 18 September 2026 reference of US$527.39, not a new score after today’s results or at the recording price. Current-reference scenario returns below are a separate calculation. The positive view depends on turning strategic demand into profitable production and cash.Finalization price refresh: a separate, later snapshotUS$538.13 was the latest available Alpaca IEX trade checked at finalization: 20 October 2026, 09:33:11.756 New York, Eastern Daylight Time. This is an intraday IEX print, not a certified consolidated close. With the same fixed 18 September 2027/2031 targets, the recalculated base price returns are +8.1079% / +53.8014%. Adding the same illustrative US$9.88/US$49.40 cash gives +9.9439% / +62.9814% gross, before tax and fees, without reinvestment. The continuous recording was completed before the market opened and explicitly uses the dated 19 October US$510.53 reference. Its rounded +14%/+62% price and +16%/+72% cash-inclusive figures remain correct for that recorded basis. The video card labels both snapshots separately. The later quote does not alter the archived model targets or constitute a fresh model rating. What Northrop sells, and who paysNorthrop Grumman develops, builds and supports stealth aircraft, strategic missiles, sensors, communications, space and missile-defense systems. The U.S. government accounted for 84% of 2025 sales, including prime and subcontract arrangements. Long contracts provide work visibility, while contract terms and delivery determine profit. Revenue recognition, customer cash receipts and reported earnings are different things.B-21 Raider and Sentinel make nuclear modernization central to the story. Mission electronics, communications and space diversify the business. Northrop does not own every missile or interceptor platform for which it supplies components.Four financial tests, checked against today’s Q3 resultsThe latest reported quarter ended 30 September 2026, with results released 20 October. The dated September AI consensus emphasized demand versus cash conversion, production economics, funding capacity and heavy investment. The fresh filing checks those four findings rather than silently turning the old research into a new model run.* Earnings and financial trend: Q3 sales were US$11.122bn, up 7% reported from US$10.423bn. Diluted EPS rose to US$7.89 from US$7.67. Research tax credits helped earnings: the effective tax rate fell to 13.4% from 16.9%, while pretax earnings declined 2%. Demand is converting into revenue, but sales growth alone does not explain per-share profit.* Profitability and margins: Q3 GAAP operating margin was 11.4%, versus 11.9% a year earlier. The separate non-GAAP segment margin was 12.1%, versus 12.3%. Aeronautics improved to 10.5% from 9.7%; Mission’s comparison included a prior-year US$68m favorable contract adjustment. Factory learning and contract mix matter; growth did not produce uniform margin expansion.* Balance sheet and leverage: September 30 cash was US$3.744bn, against US$15.197bn debt at carrying value—US$14.433bn long-term plus US$0.764bn current. This excludes lease and pension obligations. There is funding capacity alongside debt service and working-capital needs; a sovereign customer does not make the balance sheet risk-free. Unbilled receivables were US$7.899bn.* Capex and investment intensity: Nine-month capital expenditure was US$775m. The B-21 capacity agreement anticipates about US$2.5bn of company investment across multiple years, rather than a single-year expense. Cash goes out before the hoped-for manufacturing benefits, and favorable returns depend on delivery. The September debate about sustained factory investment remains a useful test, not a guarantee of an immediate cash release. One cash bridge: Q3 operating cash flow US$1.745bn − US$0.306bn capex + US$0.371bn customer-equipment sale proceeds = US$1.810bn company-defined adjusted free cash flow. Before the equipment-sale addition, the narrow CFO-minus-capex subtraction is US$1.439bn. The sale is included under the company’s non-GAAP definition; the whole US$1.810bn is not recurring operating cash. For context, nine-month operating cash was US$1.369bn and reported adjusted free cash flow US$965m. Quarterly and year-to-date amounts should not be interchanged.Current 2026 outlook: Northrop’s October 20 ...

  • Boston Scientific: Small Devices, Big Expectations | EP025
    Oct 19 2026
Boston Scientific: Small Devices, Big Expectations | EP025AI Investment Edge: Stocks, Markets & Money · Research checked 19 October 2026.A device only a few centimetres across can change a cardiac procedure. The investment question is harder: can innovation, reliable delivery and cash generation meet the expectations in Boston Scientific’s share price?Explore the dated Boston Scientific research, financial reviews and complete forecasts at iPulse AI.Dated model view: The released September research assigned Strong Buy at both its one-year and five-year horizons, with fixed endpoints 18 September 2027 and 18 September 2031. These are ORIGINAL non-adjusted model labels on the September18 reference of US$43.34; they have not been newly rescored at the current price. Current-reference scenario returns below are calculated separately. The positive view depends on competitive execution, recovery and cash after financing. What Boston Scientific sellsBoston Scientific makes medical devices used by hospitals, clinics and doctors in heart-rhythm, digestive, urological, vascular and chronic-pain procedures. Much of its revenue comes from devices used in procedures, alongside implants and supporting equipment. Cardiovascular contributed about two-thirds of Q2 sales; MedSurg supplied the rest.FARAPULSE uses catheter-delivered pulsed electric fields to treat selected atrial-fibrillation patients. WATCHMAN is a different implant: it closes a small pocket in the heart to reduce stroke risk in suitable patients. It does not treat the electrical rhythm itself. Clinical usefulness, regulatory labels, hospital purchasing and insurer payment are separate tests.Four financial tests, after the cyber disruptionThe latest reported quarter is Q2 ended 30 June 2026, released 29 July. Q3 results remain ahead. The August 25 cyber incident occurred after Q2 and cannot explain June-quarter results.* Earnings and cash: Q2 sales were US$5.442bn, up 7.5% reported and 7.0% organically. GAAP EPS was US$0.61; adjusted EPS US$0.86. H1 common net income of US$2.247bn included a US$384m discrete tax benefit. H1 operating cash flow was US$1.822bn versus US$1.827bn a year earlier. Adjusted EPS, reported profit and cash are different measures.* Margins: Q2 GAAP operating margin was 21.6%, versus 28.4% adjusted. The GAAP gross-margin bridge included an US$83m tariff recovery that the company removed from its adjusted measure. Mix, competition and costs determine how much growth reaches profit.* Balance sheet: June 30 unrestricted cash was US$539m against US$12.624bn carrying debt, or about US$12.085bn debt less that cash. These amounts precede any completed Penumbra acquisition. The pending deal’s approximately US$11bn cash portion is intended to be financed with cash and new debt; it is not all already borrowed. The announced enterprise value was about US$14.5bn.* Investment: H1 PP&E and internal-software purchases were US$372m, while expensed R&D was US$1.069bn. Acquisitions and strategic investments are additional uses of cash. US$1.822bn operating cash minus US$0.372bn purchases gives a derived H1 US$1.450bn remainder. This narrow subtraction is not the company’s non-GAAP free-cash-flow measure, which also includes disposal proceeds. Low physical capex does not mean low total investment.MiRus involved an additional US$1.5bn investment for a 33.75% nonvoting stake and an option, not ownership of the whole TAVR business; SIEGEL is investigational. Restructuring expects US$700–800m charges through 2029, including US$600–700m future cash costs. Intended gross annual benefits of about US$500m are partly to be reinvested.Current outlook: On September 8 Boston said it was unlikely to meet the July Q3/full-year sales-growth and adjusted-EPS ranges after manufacturing, order and shipping disruption. It supplied no replacement numerical ranges. September 9 restoration of operations does not establish recovered revenue or reinstate July guidance. September 22 investigation findings reported no evidence of ongoing activity after containment within the stated scope; they were not a universal guarantee about every system or a financial recovery forecast. A fresh normalized earnings multiple is not established here.US$44.24 and the fixed-date scenariosExact instrument: Boston Scientific ordinary common stock, BSX.NYSE / USD. The recording-reference Alpaca IEX trade checked October 19 was US$44.24, dated 19 October at 10:34:33 New York /18:34:33 Dubai (14:34:33.625UTC). This is a dated regular-session IEX observation, not a certified consolidated market close. A finalization refresh returned US$44.445 at 11:04:20 New York /19:04:20 Dubai (15:04:20.164UTC). The recording and its complete scenario calculations retain the explicitly dated US$44.24 reference; the later tick is not a new research rescore. The September research retains endpoint dates 18 September 2027 and 18 September 2031, approximately 11 months and 4 years 11 months from this ...
