At #ILTACON2026, Tim Kenney sat down with Alex Smith, Global Product Lead, Knowledge, Search & AI at iManage, to talk about what legal AI needs in order to become genuinely useful inside firms.
Alexโs point was simple: firms donโt just need more data. They need the ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐, ๐ธ๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ, ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฎ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ป๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฎ ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐๐ฒ.
They also got into what iManage calls its โ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐโ, a structured layer designed to connect matter, client, people and document information so AI can find the right things with much more precision.
From there, the conversation moved into ๐ ๐๐ฃ, ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐, ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต, and how firms may start moving from individual AI tasks into more connected workflows and processes.
One thing I liked was Alexโs caution around the โagentโ conversation. Weโre not at the point where someone presses a button and an entire matter runs itself, but we are getting much closer to chaining tasks together in a more intelligent way.
