Altamaha-ha…Georgia’s Own River Monster

Deep in the winding waters of Georgia’s Altamaha River, something has been lurking for generations.

Locals have told stories of a strange creature hiding beneath the surface, described as a massive, serpentine animal with a long body, powerful jaws, and a prehistoric appearance. Some call it the Altamaha-ha, Georgia’s very own river monster.

But where did the legend come from? Are the stories simply folklore passed down through generations, or could there actually be something unusual living in one of Georgia’s largest and most mysterious rivers?

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, Alex and Ashley head into the legend of the Altamaha-ha to explore the sightings, the history, the theories, and the strange stories surrounding Georgia’s most famous aquatic cryptid.

From old encounters along the Altamaha River to modern-day speculation about what might be hiding beneath the water, we’re asking the question:

What exactly is swimming through the Altamaha?

Pull up a chair, stay awhile, and let’s go looking for Georgia’s own river monster.
