About this listen

Step into the haunting world of Phantom Lover, a captivating supernatural novella by Vernon Lee (the pen name of Violet Paget), first published in 1886. Set against the backdrop of a mysterious Kentish manor, the tale follows a portrait painter hired by the enigmatic squire, William Oke, to create portraits of him and his eccentric wife, Mrs. Alice Oke. However, Alice‚s striking resemblance to a woman from a long-lost seventeenth-century painting unveils a web of secrets that blurs the lines between love, art, and the supernatural. (Summary by Anthony Leslie)
