Everybody loves to tell you to “be your authentic self” … but how authentic can you actually afford to be?
In this episode of Talk & Tell, I’m talking about the real tension between authenticity and survival. We live in a world filtered by social media, professionalism, money, pretty privilege, white privilege, colorism, expectations, and all the unspoken rules about who we’re supposed to be.
What happens when keeping it real could cost you an opportunity, a relationship, a job, or a check? Is authenticity easier when you already have wealth and security? And at what point does protecting yourself turn into performing or masking?
I don’t have all the answers. I’m just asking the question I’ve been wrestling with myself: How authentic can I afford to be?
