El Salvador is Bitcoin Country: the first nation in the world to embrace the greatest form of money in history. Since 2021 under President Bukele, El Salvador has been a leader in many aspects of Bitcoin adoption: sovereign reserves, educational initiatives, circular economies, startups, and more.

Many Bitcoiners from around the world have moved to El Salvador as a result, and many leaders in the Bitcoin industry frequently visit for events.

In this podcast, host Jethro Toro shines a spotlight on the best and brightest visiting and building Bitcoin Country.

Parker Lewis is the author of "Gradually, Then Suddenly" and Head of Business Development at Zaprite, working on Bitcoin payments after four years building collaborative custody at Unchained.

This conversation on X Spaces yesterday with Parker, Max Keiser, Stacy Herbert, and moderator Jethro Toro covered...

    • Parker’s path from Wall Street to Bitcoin: Deutsche Bank during the 2008 financial crisis, then Hayman Capital, where studying how the Fed would unwind quantitative easing led him down the Bitcoin rabbit hole in 2016
    • The story behind Gradually, Then Suddenly: an introduction to Saifedean Ammous, an early manuscript of The Bitcoin Standard, and reasoning through the most common questions about Bitcoin
    • Why self-custody is still so important: the Silicon Valley Bank failure, the fragility of the banking system, and multisig collaborative custody
    • Bitcoin as a Medium of Exchange: why payments are what let Bitcoin stand apart from the fiat rails, and Parker’s work at Zaprite
    • Texas and El Salvador: “Bitcoin Country” and the “center of hash” and why freedom-minded people move to Bitcoin-friendly jurisdictions
    • Bitcoin Histórico: a unique OG Bitcoin conference experience, where people can learn from the best speakers who have been in Bitcoin since the early days, at El Salvador’s National Palace, including Parker’s talk “Bitcoin Is Not a Panacea”

  • Efrat Fenigson - Why El Salvador Feels Free Now
    Oct 15 2026

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!

Efrat Fenigson is an independent journalist, Bitcoin educator, and host of the You're the Voice podcast (@EfratFenigson). Before that, she held a senior position in corporate tech.

El Salvador in 2021 became the first country in the world to make Bitcoin legal tender.

Efrat has visited the country several times, and she met President Bukele after speaking at the inaugural Bitcoin Histórico.

In this interview a couple of days later, Efrat and I discussed:

    • El Salvador's transformation under President Bukele: life before and after the end of gang violence, seen by someone who grew up with war at home
    • what President Bukele told Bitcoiners at dinner: after the IMF loan, is Bitcoin still part of El Salvador's plan?
    • why someone who is "the last person to be looking for heroes and saviors" says Bukele gives her hope
    • being vilified by the prime minister of her own country, and finding sanity again far from home
    • her message to the builders of Bitcoin circular economies, from Berlín and El Zonte in El Salvador to Bitcoin Ekasi in South Africa

You can also watch this interview on YouTube:

Efrat will return to El Salvador this November to speak at BitcoinHistorico.com again.

It's a unique conference at the National Palace, organized by El Salvador's Bitcoin Office, showcasing the many ways it's leading in Bitcoin adoption: strategic reserve, educational initiatives, circular economies, government policies, capital markets, and more.

Round 2 will be this November 11-12 during Freedom Month in El Salvador. Check out the full speaker list and get your tickets at BitcoinHistorico.com to join us at the National Palace.
