The Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Language and Literacy’s (CISLL) mission is to support research about understanding the processes involved in language and literacy skills in order to enhance quality of life at home, at work, and in the community.

The podcast presents research topics about:

  • The development of language and literacy skills across the lifespan.
  • Literacy skills for changing technologies and communications.
  • How people teach, learn, understand and produce spoken and written language.
  • Understanding why some individuals struggle in these domains, and how to help.
  • How these processes and activities can be optimized for all individuals.

    Dr. Melissa Clucas Walter is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at Northern Illinois University. She focuses her research on empowering caregivers, including families and early childhood education (ECE) professionals, to promote nurturing interactions in early learning settings. Her work aims to strengthen family dynamics and improve home environments while enhancing the skills and methods of educators working with young learners.

    Dr. Adriana Weisleder is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Director of the Child Language Lab at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on early language development in young children from diverse sociocultural backgrounds, particularly dual language learners. A key objective is to enhance understanding of both typical and atypical language development and to address inequities in identifying and treating child language disorders.
