Dr. Melissa Clucas Walter is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at Northern Illinois University. She focuses her research on empowering caregivers, including families and early childhood education (ECE) professionals, to promote nurturing interactions in early learning settings. Her work aims to strengthen family dynamics and improve home environments while enhancing the skills and methods of educators working with young learners.

Dr. Adriana Weisleder is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Director of the Child Language Lab at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on early language development in young children from diverse sociocultural backgrounds, particularly dual language learners. A key objective is to enhance understanding of both typical and atypical language development and to address inequities in identifying and treating child language disorders.

Dr. Allison Gladfelter is a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and associate professor at Northern Illinois University's School of Allied Health and Communication Disorders. She teaches courses on social communication skills, including the social communication implications for children exposed to maltreatment. Her research explores language acquisition and motor skills in autistic children.

Dr. Yvette Hyter, an SLP with ASHA honors and Professor Emerita at Western Michigan University, specializes in trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices. She co-authored a textbook on culturally responsive methods and edited a book on language research in post-traumatic stress. She also focuses on social pragmatics in African American children. She co-directs the Resiliency Center for Families and Children, is a founding member of the SLHS Equity Action Collective, and owns Language & Literacy Practices, LLC, and a trauma institute for children and communication.

Dr. Lindsay Harris is an associate professor of educational psychology at Northern Illinois University. Her research interests include reading across writing systems and sensory modalities, individual differences in lexical knowledge, and language and reading development in blind individuals.

Dr. Gary Lupyan is a professor and the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience Area Group Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also runs the Lupyan lab at the university. His research interests include understanding the effects of language on cognition and perception.

CISLL is excited to share its first installment of our new podcast: CISLL Presents: A Language and Literacy Podcast. Our first guest: Jennifer Krizman! Dr. Krizman is joined by co-hosts Emma Apicella and Milijana Buac.

Milijana Buac is an assistant professor at Northern Illinois University. Her research interests include typical and atypical bilingual language development with a focus on environmental factors, cognitive development in bilingual children with and without developmental disabilities, and evidence based, bias-free, assessment and intervention approaches for children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Jennifer Krizman is a research associate professor at Northwestern University. She studies how biology and experience influence the auditory, cognitive, and linguistic processes listeners engage to understand speech in everyday settings. To study this, she uses the frequency-following response, an objective electrophysiological measure of auditory processing, together with behavioral assessments of executive, language and listening abilities. Her work focuses on how language experience, such as the number of languages a person speaks, influences speech understanding. The aim of her research is to improve human communication.
