Starting From Zero: How Heimy Molina Turned Adversity Into a Career That Inspires Others

At 19, Heimy Molina left the Philippines and arrived in Australia completely alone.

No family. No established network. A new culture, a demanding engineering degree, and the pressure to build a future from scratch.

Today, Heimy is a Site Engineer at Confluence Water, Founder of Build Your Brand, a Casual Academic at UTS, Deputy Chair of Young Engineers Australia Sydney, an author, mentor and career coach—and a three-time 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards People’s Choice winner.

But behind those achievements is a story of being underestimated, overcoming stereotypes, navigating life as a migrant and young woman in engineering, and learning that success becomes far more meaningful when you use it to create opportunities for others.

In this episode, Prosper Taruvinga and Heimy explore:

• What it really takes to start over in a new country
• Building confidence when you feel underestimated
• The power of mentors and supportive networks
• Why personal branding can change your career
• Career advice for students and young professionals
• Turning adversity into purpose
• Breaking through stereotypes in engineering
• Why success isn't just about what you achieve—but who you help along the way

Heimy also shares the story behind her personal brand, “Womengineer,” and why helping others believe in their own potential has become one of the most rewarding parts of her journey.

The big question: What if the challenges you've experienced could become the very thing that helps someone else succeed?
