Host Tyson Allison has shoegaze band Shrinestone's lead singer Jason Zbichorski as guest for the third episode of Chords on Fire. Shrinestone have been together for a year and a half but are already making a splash on the Milwaukee music scene with their unique blend of abstract lyrics, lush sound and catchy guitar hooks all manifesting on 2 EPs quickly released and available now. Jason also has a long history of other bands with differing genres and he talks about his current songwriting philosophy while touching on how Shrinestone works as a band from musical idea to construction and fruition. "It's not the "me" show...the focal point changes and everyone has an important part to play to complete the puzzle." Tyson and Jason have a discussion about REM-like lyrics and how the meanings can vary from person to person, inspiration from different bands (many of which are from the 4AD label era) and where Jason's view lands on the current state of the music industry. Of course the EQ questions have returned, where Jason talks about some of his favorite Milwaukee haunts and personal musical wishlists. A lively, interesting discussion ranging from jazz to ambient to hiphop projects and Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Joy Division, David Foster Wallace, Chuck Klosterman and a surprising tie to Portishead round out this episode and an excellent performance of Shrinestone's song "Starboxing" complete this episode that you don't want to miss!
