Stranger in a Strange Land, published in 1961 by Robert A. Heinlein, is a science-fiction novel about Valentine Michael Smith, a human born on Mars and raised by Martians who returns to Earth and challenges its social, religious, and sexual norms through Martian concepts such as “grokking” and water-sharing. The book won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1962 and became a major cultural touchstone of the 1960s counterculture, influencing ideas about free love, communal living, and alternative spirituality; in 2012 the Library of Congress named it one of the 88 “Books that Shaped America.”

  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
    Oct 15 2026

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855), the eldest of the three literary Brontë sisters, was an English novelist and poet who published under the pseudonym Currer Bell to navigate the prejudices of the Victorian literary world. Born in Thornton, Yorkshire, and raised in the remote parsonage of Haworth, she drew on her own experiences of loss, limited education, and work as a governess when she wrote Jane Eyre, which appeared in 1847. The novel, a first-person coming-of-age story blending Gothic atmosphere with social realism, follows the orphaned Jane’s quest for independence, moral integrity, and love amid the constraints of class and gender; it became an immediate sensation and remains one of the most influential works of nineteenth-century English literature.

  • Paradise Lost by John Milton
    Oct 9 2026

John Milton’s Paradise Lost is an English epic poem in blank verse, first published in 1667 in ten books and reissued in a revised twelve-book form in 1674. Milton, already blind, composed it in the years after the Restoration, dictating the lines to scribes; he had earlier been a polemical writer for the Commonwealth and a defender of regicide, and the poem’s meditation on rebellion, authority, free will, and obedience is often read against that political aftermath. Drawing its main action from Genesis—the revolt of Satan and the fallen angels, the creation of the world, and the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve—it also adopts the machinery and elevated style of classical epic, especially Homer and Virgil, while announcing a sacred subject “to justify the ways of God to men.” The work became the central English Protestant epic, shaping later ideas of Satan as a grand adversary and of Eden as a lost domestic paradise.
