    Carlye chats with Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw, an accomplished writer and director and an advocate for women and nonbinary filmmakers. A firm believer in apprenticeship, Ally shares how she aims to create more opportunities for aspiring directors.

    Ally Pakiw made her TV debut with Netflix’s Feel Good, created by comic Mae Martin. She directed and executive produced the show’s first season, which was critically acclaimed as one of the best series of 2020 and boasts a "100% Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. Since then, Ally has written on 2 seasons of Dan Levy’s Schitt’s Creek, directed on Hulu’s Shrill, The Great, & helmed the much lauded “Joan Is Awful” and “Common People” episodes of Netflix’s Black Mirror.

    In 2024, Ally wrote, directed, and served as EP on her first film, Utopia’s I Used To Be Funny, starring Rachel Sennott. Her latest feature, Lilith Fair: Building A Mystery, made its world premiere at TIFF to rave reviews, and is currently streaming on Hulu.

Her second pilot MARRIED WITH FRIENDS sold in the room to CBS and she has since written for Amazon, Audible, Broadway Video, and various commercial campaigns. She currently has original TV comedy projects in development with Miramax, Shoot To Midnight (Leslye Headland), and Loudmouth (Idina Menzel), as well as an original female-driven R-rated comedy feature in development with Feigco. She is also an intuitive writing teacher, coach, and cheerleader who is passionate about helping her clients find ease, joy, and fulfillment in their unique creative processes. Her coaching has been described as “a magical drug,” “a godsend,” “perceptive as hell” and “legit brilliant.”

She shares her creative process, how she works with directors, intimacy coordinators and how she aims to create interesting characters as well as how season three will continue to explore toxic relationships in new ways.     Oppenheimer was recently named one of the top 50 TV producers of 2025 in Variety’s annual TV Producers’ Impact Report . She began her career when her first screenplay “The Remains” made the 2013 Black List, after which she co-wrote the Zac Efron film “We Are Your Friends” for Working Title Films. Meaghan then wrote on AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead,” before going on to sell her original pilot “Broken” to ABC which was made with Anna Paquin and Blair Underwood and produced by Bruna Papandrea and Reese Witherspoon. In 2018 Meaghan created and show ran her 1/2 hour dark comedy “Queen America” for Facebook Watch, starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Judith Light. She is currently in development on an original feature with Netflix, as well as various television projects under her overall deal with 20th Television.
