Apple Podcasts | TuneIn | GooglePlay | Stitcher | Spotify | RadioPublic | iHeartRadio For the next ten weeks, Rock Star Principles creator Dayna Steele is excited to introduce you to her new project… THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR is a new play based on Texas Radio Hall of Famer and entrepreneur Dayna Steele's 2016 book, Surviving Alzheimer's With Friends, Facebook and a Really Big Glass of Wine. In this best-selling caregiver's memoir, Steele candidly chronicled her mother's journey with Alzheimer's on Facebook with unfiltered observations and dark humor. The Woman in the Mirror, a dark comedy, will premiere at MATCH in Houston, Texas November 4-14 with a limited run of 12 performances. With the 2020 COVID lockdown, the live play was postponed and was instead performed as a 10-episode series of table reads with the director, creator, and an actor. Each series ended with Dayna interviewing an expert about some facet of dealing with Alzheimer's and other forms of Dementia. Leading up to opening night, you will be able to listen to those table reads here. These podcast episodes, the table read series, and the live performances are written by caregivers and performed for caregivers and those who love them with love, laughter, and wine. Lots of wine. There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers. - Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter IN THIS EPISODE… In this episode, the Woman in the Mirror team talks about why we did this Zoom table read series and how it changed all of us moving forward. We share when we decided to start the process of turning the book, Surviving Alzheimer's, into a table read series and play. We also discuss how we created the script for the Woman in the Mirror play and how I met each of the people that helped me breathe life into it. There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers. - Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter IN THIS EPISODE… As a caregiver, we often feel consumed by our emotions. Especially guilt. We regularly make tough calls and hard decisions in the best interest of our loved one, but it can often feel like we're taking everything away from them - as if we're punishing them for their actions and behaviors, even when we know it's beyond their control. "You become consumed with the guilt. I had taken her home away. I had taken her car away. I had taken her dog away and I had taken her phone away. I HAD TAKEN EVERYTHING AWAY FROM MY MOTHER." The expert interview following this episode features media blogger Mike McGuff who lost his mom to early-onset Alzheimer's. He now serves as an Alzheimer's Ambassador in the congressional district in Houston, Texas, working tirelessly as an advocate for more care, more research, and a cure for Alzheimer's. Mike shares some of the latest information about Alzheimer's that he is currently delivering to government officials and explains how he's working to push new legislation to help younger individuals that are diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. He also shares how his mother's diagnosis impacted his life and the decisions he's made as an adult, his thoughts on the blood test that screens for Alzheimer's, and how becoming an Alzheimer's advocate has helped him improve his mental health. "It doesn't matter if you visit every day or once a month - it's all the same to someone in Memory Care. So I have to remind myself that I have her in a place that's taking care of her. That's what I'm paying for - peace of mind." - Dayna Steele This week on Rock Star Principles: Combatting "Caregiver's Guilt" and sneaking Sandy into the hospital for a surprise visitMoving Mom - again - to facility #4Helping Mom find joy through 'little gifts from Dayna Steele'Momentary gifts of clarity before returning to the 'lumps in the throat' moments and facing the hard reality that I can no longer call and speak to Mom at-willEntering the 6th Stage of Alzheimer's and coming to terms with the inevitableWhere we currently are in the fight against Alzheimer's diseaseGetting legislation passed to benefit younger onset Alzheimer's patientsHow his mother's diagnosis impacted Mike's life and the decisions he's made as an adultHow caregivers often experience symptoms of PTSD Related Content: Alzheimer's Impact MovementYouTube - "The Woman in the Mirror" table read seriesBook: Surviving Alzheimer's with Friends, Facebook and a Really Big Glass of WinePlay: The Woman in the MirrorBuy tickets to a live performance in Houston: https://matchouston.org/events/2021/woman-mirror More About Dayna Steele Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Dayna Steele's Rock Star Principles. She was over for a few hours late yesterday. As we were packing her up to go off with my aunt and uncle, I said to Wonder Husband, 'I'm so tired of her.' I couldn't believe the words came out of my mouth - but they did." The expert interview following this episode features attorney Betsy Grubbs talking about the most important documents you should have no matter what and why it's crucial to have them before anything like this happens. She explains each of these documents in depth and how your loved ones, your physicians, and your attorney use these documents as a road map on what you want, even when you're unable to communicate it yourself. We discuss the importance of making sure the beneficiary designations are up-to-date on insurance policies, bank accounts, and stock accounts. My family's dirty little secret is: Mom hates old people. She always has. She's just never had any patience for walkers, wheelchairs, etc. And this is proving to be an issue with her being in assisted living. The expert interview following this episode features good friend and fellow caregiver, Doug Meisinger, who is currently going through much of the same. Doug shares his experience as an out-of-town caregiver for his mother with Alzheimer's and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted his mother's emotional and cognitive decline. We discuss the emotional turmoil we experience as caregivers. Doug also shares the guilt he feels as a caregiver from a distance and what has surprised him the most throughout this journey. While most of the time I have been able to keep my emotions in check, there are times when the waves of emotion are so great - so powerful - they burst through the metaphorical levee walls and completely envelop me. Sometimes it only takes one small thing to cause that levee to break. And other times - it's a chain of small things. The expert interview following this episode features Long Term Care Insurance specialist, Honey Leveen. Honey has over 30 years of experience helping clients make well-informed, confident decisions regarding long-term care planning. Honey discusses the importance of having Long Term Care Insurance and how it's different from Medicare and health insurance. We discuss the out-of-pocket costs associated with private care homes and how working with a long term care insurance specialist can help you find a policy that's suitable for you and your budget. We also discuss why many people resist purchasing a long-term care insurance policy and the different plans currently available on the market. There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers. - Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter IN THIS EPISODE… If there's one thing I've noticed about this horrific disease, it's this: Alzheimer's has a way to revert a person's personality back to child-like (and even toddler-like) behaviors. From mood swings and temper tantrums to repeatedly asking "Where are we going?" - people with Alzheimer's often tend to manifest behaviors that closely resemble what parents call the 'Terrible 2's' for toddlers. And it appears now, we are entering the toddler stage… with Mom's Terrible 2's rearing their ugly head. The expert interview following this episode features the Co-Producer of The Woman in the Mirror. Melissa Stevens. She is the widow of radio legend Mark Stevens of KLOL Stevens and Pruett fame and was the first person I reached out to when I began Mom's journey with Alzheimer's. Melissa shares the ups and downs she experienced while being Mark's caregiver. We discuss Mark's earlier symptoms and why early signs are often overlooked by friends and loved ones. She shares the defining moment when she realized something more serious was wrong and when she knew it was time for Mark to see a doctor. She explains why she decided to keep her husband home instead of using an assisted living facility and why she still questions whether she made the right decision. We also discuss how friends often 'evaporate' after a loved one's diagnosis with Alzheimer's and why it's crucial for caregivers to set aside time to focus on their own self-care. "Here's a simple explanation of this horrific disease: You go from birth to infant to toddler to teenager to adult when you're growing up. And when the 'long goodbye' starts - you go from adult to teenager to toddler to infant to the end." - Dayna Steele This week on Rock Star Principles: Mom's 'second phase' of the Terrible TwosMom's feeling of loneliness - despite all the people and activities at her assisted living homeCherishing the time we have with loved onesMom's "where are we going?' phase and her astounding perception of certain thingsRefraining from arguing or correcting Mom and why it was one of the hardest things to do throughout this journeyMom's love of Girl Scout Cookies… and her love of sneaking them out of my pantryMom's second move and my 'Fuck You Comcast Cable" Facebook postMelissa's experience with being her husband's caregiverWhy we believe early signs of Alzheimer's are often overlooked by close friends and loved onesThe transition from 'Rain Man-like tendencies' to progressive cognitive deteriorationThe defining moment for Melissa when she knew something more serious was wrongWhy you should never talk about an Alzheimer's patient in front of them as if they're not there - regardless of what stage they're inMark's feeling of 'losing his mind' during his Alzheimer's journeyTaking comfort in the fact that you're doing the best you can in a difficult situationHow friends often 'evaporate' after an Alzheimer's diagnosisThe importance of self-care as a caregiver Related Content: YouTube - "The Woman in the Mirror" table read seriesBook: Surviving Alzheimer's with Friends, Facebook and a Really Big Glass of WinePlay: The Woman in the MirrorBuy tickets to a live performance in Houston: https://matchouston.org/events/2021/woman-mirror More About Dayna Steele Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Dayna Steele's Rock Star Principles.
