“But you look great.” “At least they caught it early.” “You’re done with treatment now, right?” “Just stay positive.”
Most people mean well. But when you’ve been through breast cancer, even a well-intentioned comment can minimize what you’re carrying—or hit a tender place you weren’t expecting.
In this episode of Breast Cancer Resilience Radio, we’re talking about the things people say after breast cancer that can hurt, frustrate, or leave you feeling unseen.
We’ll explore why these comments can land so differently than they were intended, how to decide whether to let it go, gently redirect, or speak up—and what to do with the feelings that can linger long after the conversation is over.
Because two things can be true at the same time: someone can mean well, and their words can still hurt.
And instead of asking, “Why did that bother me so much?” I’ll give you a different question to try:
“What did that touch in me?”
This one is a little lighter, very real, and probably includes at least one comment you’ve heard yourself.
If you’ve ever smiled through something someone said about your cancer while thinking, Please don’t say that, this episode is for you.
