Años más tarde, en 2017, la Policía reabre el caso. En la escena del segundo crimen se halló un colgante con la forma de la isla de Sicilia, una pista clave que apuntaba al entorno militar estadounidense en Zaragoza, y se vincula a Malcolm Abdul Harvey, un militar norteamericano destinado allí en los años 90, que más tarde fue sheriff en EE.UU. Malcolm murió en 2016 antes de poder ser arrestado, pero es identificado como el autor gracias a las pruebas forenses que se realizaron sobre ambas víctimas.
