  • Why Bad Headlines Can Make Electric Cars Better

A single bad headline can feel like it’s “setting EV adoption back”. But what if the real danger is trying to shut those headlines down? We take a hard look at why the press matters to electric car safety, and why calling everything “misinformation” can become a convenient shield for industry mistakes rather than a service to drivers.

We start with a brutal lesson from motoring history: the Ford Pinto. Under tight budgets and deadlines, a known fuel tank flaw stayed in production, local crash reports failed to create national pressure, and a courtroom cost benefit analysis put a price on injury and death. That story is not ancient trivia. It’s a warning about what happens when scrutiny is weak and accountability arrives too late.

Then we bring it into the modern EV safety debate: range anxiety, battery fires, and the real-world recalls that followed. We talk Hyundai Kona and Chevrolet Bolt battery recalls, the billions spent to protect customers and brands, and why fast action often happens when media attention makes inaction impossible. We also dig into the amygdala and risk perception to explain why scary stories stick, without assuming they automatically stop people buying electric cars, using air crash reporting and a Channel 5 case study as reality checks.

If you care about electric vehicles, road safety, battery fire risk, and honest consumer information, this one is for you. Subscribe, share with a friend who argues about EV “myths”, and leave us a review with your take on where responsible reporting ends and fearmongering begins.

  • How A 1948 Hat Slogan Explains EV Adoption
    Sep 18 2026

A single advertising line helped rescue an entire industry, and it points to a hard truth about the UK’s electric car transition: you cannot sell a product to people who do not yet want the idea. We start in Britain in 1948, when rationing and a government-issued demobilisation suit inadvertently crushed men’s hat sales. The Hatters Development Council’s response was not another discount or a technical tweak, but a category-changing campaign: “If you want to get ahead, get a hat.” It sold meaning first, then demand followed.

From there, we move into upstream thinking, using Dan Heath’s “go up the river” parable and a sharp Expedia case study. Instead of shaving seconds off customer service scripts, Expedia asked why calls were happening at all and removed the root cause. That mindset is exactly what I think is missing from too much EV policy and industry lobbying. Calls for VAT cuts on electric cars, lower VAT on public charging, bigger grants and reduced grid fees can be downstream answers that fail to address what actually holds drivers back.

We also tackle the psychology: range anxiety, fear of using public chargers, and the habit of dismissing real concerns as “myths”. I compare EV risk narratives with airline safety briefings, and I argue for psychopractical solutions like making charging visible from main routes with simple signage. Finally, we look at why creativity matters, why emotional triggers drive purchasing more than most people admit, and why a dedicated EV oversight body could help build trust, standards and momentum.

If you found this useful, subscribe, share it with someone still on the fence about electric cars, and leave a review with the one upstream question you think the EV industry should ask first.

  • Oil, Net Zero, and the Parties That Would Have Us Go Backwards
    Aug 13 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

The lawn is brown, the leaves are falling, and it’s only early August. That uneasy feeling becomes our starting point for a straight-talking look at climate change, net zero, and why the public conversation gets derailed by “it’s not consistent every year” doubt.

We unpack why extreme weather swings can confuse the issue, while the long-term evidence still points one way: warming oceans, melting ice caps, and greenhouse gas emissions that outpace what nature can absorb. Then we ground it in UK reality, from our share of carbon emissions to why per-person and per-square-mile figures matter in a small, densely populated country. We also revisit wins like the ozone layer recovery and the clean-up of acid rain, because visible success stories are a reminder that policy plus engineering can actually move the dial.

From there, we get practical and a bit provocative. We look at EV sales targets, why penalties can end up toothless, and why the UK could lead by setting domestic standards that become the template for global electric vehicle transition. We challenge the assumption that drilling more North Sea oil brings cheaper bills, and we ask a bigger question: are we wasting oil on the least sensible use? Oil is not just petrol and diesel, it’s the feedstock for plastics, chemicals, lubricants and materials that last, while internal combustion engines throw most energy away as heat. We also tackle wind turbine myths on lifespan and recyclability, and put the bird-death debate into clearer perspective.

If you care about UK energy security, renewable energy, electric cars, and a credible net zero pathway, listen through and tell us where you disagree. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the conversation.
