This week I sat down with Annie Meyers-Shyer, the woman behind This Oak House, the Instagram account documenting her family's historic home renovation in Los Angeles that has completely taken over my algorithm and my heart. Annie grew up surrounded by design and storytelling as the daughter of Nancy Meyers, known for movies such as Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday, and her father, Charles Shyer, who worked alongside Nancy as a writer and director on many of those same films. But her own path took a different shape entirely, from working as an accessories editor at Harper's Bazaar in New York to a five year run as West Coast PR for Chanel, before eventually landing back in Los Angeles as a wife, mother, and, as she puts it herself, "the absolute accidental influencer."

We get into what it actually looks like to take on a major renovation with two kids underfoot, how she thinks about pace and patience when nothing is moving fast enough, the design instincts she absorbed from watching her mother obsess over every detail of a set, right down to matching paint to Lindsay Lohan's hair color, and how she's built a genuinely joyful online community around something as unglamorous as knob hardware and paint swatches. we also talk about grief, family, and legacy, since this conversation comes not long after the loss of her father.
