  • HOMILY ON EZEKIEL 28:1 - 10
    Aug 16 2022
Tuesday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time

The word of the LORD came to me: Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre:  Thus says the Lord GOD:

Because you are haughty of heart, you say, “A god am I! I occupy a godly throne in the heart of the sea!”— And yet you are a man, and not a god, however you may think yourself like a god. Oh yes, you are wiser than Daniel, there is no secret that is beyond you. By your wisdom and your intelligence you have made riches for yourself; You have put gold and silver into your treasuries. By your great wisdom applied to your trading you have heaped up your riches; your heart has grown haughty from your riches– therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have thought yourself to have the mind of a god, Therefore I will bring against you foreigners, the most barbarous of nations. They shall draw their swords against your beauteous wisdom, they shall run them through your splendid apparel. They shall thrust you down to the pit, there to die a bloodied corpse, in the heart of the sea. Will you then say, “I am a god!” when you face your murderers? No, you are man, not a god, handed over to those who will slay you. You shall die the death of the uncircumcised at the hands of foreigners, for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD.

Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord

The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!” Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us!”

Thursday of the Third Week of Lent

Thus says the LORD: This is what I commanded my people: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed. They walked in the hardness of their evil hearts and turned their backs, not their faces, to me. From the day that your fathers left the land of Egypt even to this day, I have sent you untiringly all my servants the prophets. Yet they have not obeyed me nor paid heed; they have stiffened their necks and done worse than their fathers. When you speak all these words to them, they will not listen to you either; when you call to them, they will not answer you. Say to them: This is the nation that does not listen to the voice of the LORD, its God, or take correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech.

  • HOMILY ON Jer 17:5-10 AND Lk 16:19-31
    Mar 17 2022
Thursday of the Second Week of Lent

Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings,             who seeks his strength in flesh,             whose heart turns away from the LORD. He is like a barren bush in the desert             that enjoys no change of season, But stands in a lava waste,             a salt and empty earth. Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,             whose hope is the LORD. He is like a tree planted beside the waters             that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes,             its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress,             but still bears fruit. More tortuous than all else is the human heart,             beyond remedy; who can understand it? I, the LORD, alone probe the mind             and test the heart, To reward everyone according to his ways,             according to the merit of his deeds.
