  • Offshoot: Keep Asking
    Oct 2 2026

Y’all. Life is coming at me pretty fast these days. I’ve got more work stacking up in front of me that I feel capable of completing AND there are lots of new ideas and new projects ahead AND a youth soccer team to coach, so I hope you can find some patience with me as we pause the Gathered & Scattered series for a bit.

Don’t worry. New episodes are still coming your way, like today's, but they will be more like retellings of messages from our budding gathering here in Laurel. Just trying to make sure there’s still time through it all to keep things fresh here. Thanks for understanding.

On that note, today’s episode is my message from Sunday night at our gathering. We’re still figuring out a name for ourselves (if you’ve got one, let us know! Or better yet, come join us!) as we look at what it means to be like children…the little ones Jesus said would help bring his expansive and inclusive kingdom to life. On Sunday, we looked at curiosity and how Jesus reminds us to hold on to it and allow it to shape our lives and our prayers. Let me know what you think!

  • Gathered & Scattered: Assume the Position
    Sep 22 2026

Back on the Gathered and Scattered track here as we walk through the opening and closing moments in each gospel when Jesus gathers with his people and scatters them out into the world. We’re in the beginning of Mark’s gospel today as Jesus enters the pulpit for the presumably the first time and gets heckled out of the gate. Let me know what you think.

  • Offshoot: Children versus Adults
    Sep 15 2026

Well, our little fledgling fellowship came to life on Sunday night and it was everything it needed to be for those of us in the room. We’ll be there in the Blackbird Creative Studio every Sunday night at 5:00pm if you’d like to join.

It was a whirlwind of a weekend and a birthday at our house and since we launched Sunday night, I thought it best to share with you some of what I shared with our group on Sunday night, just to get an idea of what we’re up to over there.

We’ll get back to Gathering and Scattering soon, but for now enjoy “Children v. Adults,” reflection on Luke 18:15-17 where Jesus scolds his disciples for shooing the children away from him.

  • Gathered & Scattered: Can't Stop. Won't Stop
    Sep 9 2026

From the beginning of Matthews and the Beatitudes to the end of Matthew and the Great Commission. Today, we’re taking a look at how Jesus scattered his followers for the very last time and trying to figure out what that means for us and the ways we leave from the places and spaces in which we gather and scatter out into the world to be followers of Jesus as well. Let me know what you think.

  • Gathered & Scattered: Blessed or Blessed?
    Sep 1 2026

Is it blessed or blessed? I never know how to say it...Let's figure it out today.

For three weeks we’ve primed the pump on Jesus gathering folks by looking at what he did before he ever gathered anyone on his own, why he wanted to gather with other folks, and the kinds of spaces he created for folks to gather. Now it’s time to actually look at Jesus convening a gathering and then scattering those folks into the world.

For the next few weeks, we’re going to look at half a dozen or so examples of Jesus gathering and scattering folks. And we’ll do it by looking at the first and last gatherings he has with folks in each gospel. First up: Matthew.

  • Gathered & Scattered: Lawn Church
    Aug 25 2026

Here we are with another episode of Gathered and Scattered, our look at how Jesus brought people together and sent them out into the world in hopes of answering this question that’s been gnawing at me for years:

    What’s the point of church?

Despite my admission that I’m a terrible evangelist in last week’s episode, I do want to invite to join my family and a few others as we begin to gather in person and give some shape to a community that we hope will echo more closely the one we see Jesus building with his disciples. We’ll begin meeting on Sunday, September 13 at 5:00pm at the Blackbird Creative Studio in downtown Laurel at Union Hall. The more the merrier. Drop me a message if you have any questions!

Boy in the Temple: Luke 2:41-52
    Nazareth: Luke 4:18-21
Cleansing: Matthew 21:12–13, Mark 11:15–17, Luke 19:45–46, and John 2:13–16
    Feeding 5,000: Matthew 14:13–21, Mark 6:31–44, Luke 9:12–17, John 6:1–14
    Zacchaeus: Luke 19:1-10
    Roof Healing: Luke 5:17-39

  • Gathered & Scattered: Find Your People
    Aug 18 2026

Welcome back to another episode of Gathered & Scattered, an exploration of this question that’s been gnawing at me for years: what’s the point of church? I love that one of the first things that all the gospel writers agree on is that it didn’t take long for Jesus to find his people after he stepped out of the Jordan and into his public ministry. We all know he called the disciples, but we often think about it in terms of evangelism and not community. I think we’ve got that backwards.

I want to invite to join my family and a few others as we begin to gather in person and give some shape to a community that we hope will echo more closely the one we see Jesus building with his disciples. We’ll begin meeting on Sunday, September 13 at 5:00pm at the Blackbird Creative Studio in downtown Laurel at Union Hall. The more the merrier. Drop me a message if you have any questions!

  • Gathered & Scattered: Memory Lane
    Aug 11 2026

We’re starting Gathered & Scattered, a new series about what it means to be the body of Christ, an exploration of this question that’s been gnawing at me for years:

    What’s the point of church?

To figure out the point of church, we’ve got to go back to before there ever was a church, and take a look at how Jesus entered into the community where he lived. Before he ever gathered or scattered anyone on his own, it’s important to remember how he brought himself into the lives of others and see if there’s anything to take away.

I think there is. Let me know what you think.
