In the final part of my conversation with Lane Kamp, we reach the moment everything began to change — not just internally, but in action. Lane opens up about the painful, careful process of separating from the cult, protecting his family, and building a way out of a life he had once helped uphold.

We talk about the emotional weight of leaving, the tactical steps it took to remove himself and his loved ones, and what it means to rebuild when your entire identity has been shaped by belief and loyalty. It’s a story of quiet strength, deep reflection, and the kind of courage that doesn’t always come with applause — but absolutely matters.

To close, Lane shares a deeply personal chapter from his upcoming book — a glimpse into his childhood, when everything still felt normal… and the path ahead was yet unknown.

This is how you leave. This is how you begin again.

In Part 3 of my conversation with Lane Kamp, we explore the dual life of the cult during its time in Tonto Village — a small mountain town where the group integrated deeply into the community while privately maintaining layers of spiritual control and unspoken rules.

Lane, now an adult with his own family, describes what it was like to live under that public-private split. The charter school had winning chess and basketball teams. The church’s businesses — from construction and frozen treats to law and accounting — were seen as legitimate and even admirable. But beneath that positive reputation was a powerful pressure to conform.

In this episode, Lane shares how he once faked “trancing” to meet expectations, and how he slowly began to recognize the cracks in the system — the subtle contradictions, the lawsuits used as defense, and the quiet conversations that led to the earliest version of a plan to leave.

This episode captures the moment when performance starts to falter… and truth begins to rise.

  • The God Who Punishes: Fear, Shame, and Breaking the Rules

What happens when your concept of God is shaped more by fear than by love? In this episode, I explore the fear-based spiritual teachings that governed my childhood—where consequences weren’t just earthly, but eternal. From hellfire and damnation to karma and reincarnation, every action carried the weight of divine punishment.

I share how women were treated as lesser, how relationships were distorted by shame and control, and how even something like smoking pot turned into a spiritual scandal. The punishment didn’t just come from leaders—it was baked into the belief system itself.

We also dive into codependency: what it is, where it comes from, and how these environments of fear and control breed it. When you’re taught that love must be earned, that pleasing others keeps you safe, or that your worth depends on obedience, codependency takes root. I talk about the patterns it creates and how I’ve been working to unravel them—reclaiming my sense of self, boundaries, and agency in the process.

This episode is about the long shadow of religious fear, how it warps our relationships with others and ourselves, and what it takes to break free and begin to heal.
