Elijah Mercer is closing Pine Lake Cabins for the winter when he hears his mother calling from the trees behind the pump house. Audrey Mercer is supposed to be at home, more than an hour away.
At first, Elijah blames the road, the cold air, or somebody playing a cruel prank near the property. Then Audrey says something familiar during a private phone call, and the same words come back to him from the woods.
With the cabins dark, the pump shut down, and his truck sitting across an open clearing, Elijah has to decide whether the voice is coming from a person he cannot see—or from something that knows exactly how to make him listen.
