Someone gets the car you wanted. It rains on your birthday. A friend laughs a little too long with someone across the room. And something in you tightens.
This teaching looks at where that tightening comes from. Each of us carries a private picture of how life should go, shaped by every experience we've ever had: the gentle dog or the one that bit, the job that ended, the partner who changed. Meanwhile the world has been unfolding by its own causes for billions of years, and it has never once checked that picture. When the two don't match, we go to work trying to manage everything and everyone outside us. It is exhausting, and it never quite works.
There is another way. The old teachings call these stored impressions samskaras, patterns that didn't make it through us, pressed down and held in place. Coping with them is still pushing. Pretending to like them is still pushing. What frees them is welcoming them up, feeling them fully, and letting them pass through once and for all.
We walk the stages together: resistance, coping, tolerating, and finally welcoming. And we arrive at compassion, first for the part of ourselves we buried long ago, then for everyone still fighting the world to make it match.
Is freedom freedom for yourself, or freedom from yourself? Sit with that one.
May we be peaceful. May we be gentle with whatever rises in us. May we be free. May the peace we touch within ourselves become peace for all beings.
Namaste.
