The scariest horror movies are the ones that feel like they could actually happen. The 2008 film The Strangers taps into one of our most basic fears of being targeted by people we don’t know, in a place where we’re supposed to feel safe. The movie follows a couple whose night takes a terrifying turn when three masked strangers begin terrorizing them at an isolated home. The director, Bryan Bertino, was inspired to write The Strangers after hearing about a chilling unsolved case: the Keddie Cabin Murders. In April 1981, at Cabin 28 in Keddie, California, Sue Sharp, her teenage son John, and his friend Dana Wingate were murdered inside the family’s cabin. Sue’s 12-year-old daughter, Tina, disappeared that same night, and her remains were discovered years later, in 1984. Despite decades of investigation, unanswered questions, and renewed interest in the case, no one has been charged with the murders.
