We all remember the most awesome things from our childhood as we grew up over the years. But are all those cool things still as great as you remember? Or does it all just seem that way due to the rose-colored lenses of nostalgia? This Podcast aims to answer that very question across a range of topics. Are you a disco kid? Did you grow up during the greatest decade for music and hairbands? Are your favorite memories all from the final years of the 20th century? Then you're in good company as Jeffrey, Andy, Michael, and Mike (Yes, we have two of them) answer the question: Is it Cool or Just Nostalgia?

  • 038 - Transformers (1986): The Toy Ad That Killed Optimus Prime
    Oct 15 2026

The Transformers: The Movie (1986) turns 40, and we're still arguing about what happened to Optimus Prime.

Hasbro is calling its anniversary campaign the Apology Tour. Fair warning: we remember why. For Episode 38, we put a lifelong G1 fan in the room with first-time viewers and ask how much this movie gives you when childhood isn't doing the heavy lifting. You get a planet-eating Unicron, a stack of fallen heroes, and barely a moment to learn the new names before somebody starts shooting again.

We argue over Hot Rod's responsibility, Ultra Magnus's leadership credentials, and the very convenient rules for which robots can be put back together. Then there's the soundtrack. Stan Bush's The Touch is part of the film's identity, but can nonstop music carry a story that's always racing to the next battle?

We also pitch remakes that give Hot Rod an actual reckoning, let Megatron chase power on his own terms, or stretch the story into two movies. Bring your favorite Autobot and your best defense. We've got room for both the kid who wore out the tape and the adult asking where the introductions went.

  • 037 - Demolition Man (1993) Predicted the Future Better Than We Thought
    Oct 1 2026

Did Demolition Man (1993) call the future with swearing fines and Taco Bell fine dining, or does it only work because we were kids?

Everybody files this one under dumb 90s Stallone fun. Then you check the credits. The big rewrite came from Daniel Waters, the guy who wrote Heathers, who pitched it as an action version of Woody Allen's Sleeper and banged it out in two and a half weeks. That's how a movie with a 300-foot bungee jump out of a Chinook ends up with cops singing the Armour Hot Dogs jingle on patrol.

Behind the camera it was chaos. The 72-day shoot ran to 112, Lori Petty was fired after two days, and the budget swelled from $45 million to $77 million. It opened at #1 anyway and pulled $159 million worldwide. Ebert gave it a thumbs up, Siskel a thumbs down, and Sandra Bullock landed a Razzie nomination for the role that made her a star.

Now 2032 is six years away, and the jokes keep looking like forecasts. Video-screen bosses, no-touch greetings, a city that fines your mouth. The satire has aged better than anybody expected. The final-act brawl with Wesley Snipes? That's where the goggles come out. Jeffrey, Michael, Andy, and Mike (The Deuce) fight it out, then cast the vote. Be well, Nostalgia Hunters.

  • 036 - 12 Monkeys Hits Completely Different After 2020
    Aug 27 2026

Is 12 Monkeys (1995) still one of the smartest sci-fi movies ever made, or does it only feel that way because we all lived through the plot?

Terry Gilliam had $29 million, a script by David and Janet Peoples built on Chris Marker's 1962 short film La Jetee, and Universal watching every dollar. What he handed back was a 129 minute studio thriller that behaves like a panic attack. Bruce Willis spends most of it soaked, shackled, and insisting he is not crazy. Nobody believes him. Neither do you, and that is the trick.

🐒 Then there is Jeffrey Goines. Brad Pitt spent weeks inside the psychiatric ward at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia before cameras rolled, came back with a performance that never once sits still, and turned a supporting part into an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win. Half of you think it is the bravest swing of his career. The other half thinks he is doing a bit for two hours straight.

The bigger problem is what 2020 did to this movie. In 1995 a manmade virus wiping out 99 percent of humanity was a wild premise you watched from a safe distance. That distance is gone. So the question is whether 12 Monkeys is a great film or a lucky one, and whether the airport ending still hits when the whole movie tells you what happens in its first sixty seconds. Jeffrey, Michael, Andy, and Mike fight about it, then vote.
