She grew up in the segregated slums of St. Louis, became one of the biggest stars in Europe, and still found time to spy on the Nazis.

In this episode of Angry Women in History, Jessi and Jose dig into the life of Josephine Baker: dancer, singer, film star, French Resistance spy, and civil rights fighter who refused to perform for segregated audiences.

They talk about why Paris felt like freedom (and how it was still racist, just differently), how she smuggled secrets past the Nazis written on her own skin, and why standing up for herself at a New York club got her called a communist and investigated by the FBI.

Plus: a fake Italian count, a pet cheetah named Chiquita, and a Finnish connection you probably didn't see coming.
