St. Joseph, Missouri, is well-known as the hometown of Jesse James, famous bank robber and outlaw. In this week’s episode, Jack tells the story of Mr. Jesse and the impact he made on young John and Robert Stewart.

The Civil War is raging across the country in 1863 and 64. St. Joe was a major provider for the slave markets in St. Louis. This area of the country was divided on the issue, but the Stewarts believed no one should have the right to own slaves.

James Stewart was one of the new kids in town when he and his brothers and sisters started school in Andrew County. As did many of the midwestern families, the Stewarts grew corn and wheat to supply the thousands of people making their way through St. Joe, on their way to California and hopes for a future of gold.

Jack's 3rd great-grandfather, Samuel Stewart, died in 1879. His desire was to leave behind a legacy for his children.

This week, Sam, Mary, and their six children make the 700-mile trip from Ohio to Andrew County, Missouri, by Conestoga wagon.

Sam worked hard as a tradesman in Ohio but still had not found what he wanted to do with his life. When he heard about new Indian lands opening in Missouri, he and Mary decided to go.
