About this listen

Lessons in Love is all about relationships... hard love, soft love, love that didn't work, love that changed, unrequited love. Older people talking about their experiences in love and relationships and passing on any advice they might have to the younger generation. We started this project in the winter of 2022-23, running discussion sessions in AgeUK day care centres in East Kent, hearing amazing and sometimes heartbreaking stories. Some of those who took part in the discussion sessions agreed to be interviewed for the podcast. And some of those who were interviewed agreed that their stories could be shared with the wider public. Usually on the condition that I only introduced them using their first names. So it's been quite a process. Very many thanks to everyone who has taken part. Also thanks to AgeUK for helping with the organisation, to Kevin Macleod for the music*, and to the Kent Community Foundation who have funded the project. If you'd like to make a donation to any of the AgeUKs that have taken part, please visit www.justgiving.com and search for Lessons in Love.* "Verano Sensual" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/© 2023 Lessons in Love Relationships Social Sciences

They told me how they were initially won over, about some of the flashpoints in their relationships, and the difficulties of looking after a partner who is very ill.

Mary and John met at a Conservative Party dance in Ashford in the 1950s - and for much of their lives their relationship was fairly straightforward. Now in their retirement, their relationship is undergoing major challenge as John has become blind and has dementia.

  • Brian and Eileen recorded at AgeUK in Ashford
    Mar 23 2023

Brian and Eileen have been married for over 60 years, having met while Eileen was working at a children's home in Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Their relationship had a very surprising beginning  but flourished both as a romantic and working partnership. Eileen began by explaining the rather rapid moves that Brian made in those early days.
