After 20 years in the Army, multiple traumatic brain injuries, and years of navigating the challenges of military life and transitioning into the civilian world, Cody decided to explore a different approach to his mental health. Just days after undergoing ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT treatment in Mexico, he sits down with Kevin, Ryan, and Nick to share exactly what happened, what surprised him, and how he's feeling on the other side of it. From a brutal sweat lodge and an intense overnight ibogaine experience to an emotional journey that brought years of suppressed feelings to the surface, Cody doesn't hold anything back. He opens up about his previous experience with ayahuasca, why it left him feeling worse, and how this latest experience felt different. There are some incredibly raw moments as Cody reflects on grief, personal struggles, and the emotional baggage that can come with a lifetime of military service. Of course, it's still Liberty Risk, so things don't stay serious for long. The conversation takes a few hilarious detours into testosterone replacement therapy, men's health, military medical policies, hair transplants, questionable grooming habits, and plenty of stories that probably wouldn't make it into a traditional health and wellness podcast. But underneath the laughs is an important conversation about veterans, mental health, the challenges of asking for help, and what happens when conventional approaches don't seem to be getting someone where they want to be. Cody also shares his hopes of eventually helping other veterans access treatment and why he believes sharing his experience, both the good and the bad, is worth doing. From the realities of psychedelic treatment to the struggles of life after the military, this episode is equal parts hilarious, vulnerable, and thought-provoking. We pick things up with some absolutely insane stories from Rodney's years in Naval Special Warfare, including old-school SEAL Team hazing that would never fly today, getting dragged behind a Humvee, nearly freezing to death in a lake, and military shenanigans that somehow didn't end with everyone getting court-martialed. Rodney takes us back to the late 1980s, when a Navy recruiter's bullshit promise of becoming a doctor somehow landed him in BUD/S Class 143. From there, he takes us through his early years at SEAL Team 4, running operations throughout Central and South America during the height of the War on Drvgs. We get into guarding a downed Chinook in the Honduran jungle, scouting Manuel Noriega's checkpoints in Panama, and the devastating loss of fellow SEALs during Operation Just Cause. After leaving the Teams, Rodney made an unlikely transition into the U.S. Marshals Service, with a few ridiculous detours along the way. But everything changed after 9/11, when he was recruited into the CIA's Global Response Staff as one of the original "Dirty 30," the first 30 federal employees brought in to provide security for CIA operations overseas. After little more than HR paperwork and a day at the range, he was on a plane to Afghanistan, where he was handed a rifle, body armor, and told to get to work. We wrap up Part 1 with Rodney's early CIA operations in Afghanistan, the relentless deployment tempo of the Global War on Terror, and the toll it took on life back home. It's a hell of a journey through old-school Navy SEAL history, special operations, and the early days of the War on Terror, packed with wild stories, military shenanigans, and plenty of laughs.
