Israel Cannan is a storyteller, brand builder, entrepreneur and most importantly, a dad and husband. After failing high school, Israel fell into a career as an actor - landing a role on Home & Away and starring in a feature film that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. At 23, he was offered the Hollywood dream by one of the worlds biggest agencies… and chose to walk away. Instead, he picked up a guitar and spent years writing songs, touring, and couch-surfing around the world supporting artists like Passenger, Bastille, and Ben Howard. His music eventually found its way into film and television, scoring campaigns for brands including Google and Great Northern Brewing Co. Through every chapter of his life, one thing remained constant: a love for storytelling. That passion eventually led him to trade his guitar case for a camera. After thousands of hours teaching himself how to film, edit, direct, and market, Israel began helping companies around the world tell stories that actually drive results. Since then he has served as Global Marketing Director for a $20M+ company, co-founded and sold multiple businesses, directed an award-winning documentary (Fish Out Of Water), and built Better Brands - a boutique storytelling agency helping purpose-driven companies grow through strategy, video, and digital marketing. On this podcast, Israel sits down with entrepreneurs, creatives, athletes, and deep thinkers to explore the ideas behind building a meaningful life and meaningful work. Because building a great business isn’t just about strategy. It’s about curiosity, courage, creativity, and the willingness to take an unconventional path. This podcast is a space to explore the intersection of storytelling, business, creativity, family, and personal growth - and to learn from the people who are brave enough to build something that matters.Copyright 2026 Israel Cannan Economics Leadership Management & Leadership Self-Help Social Sciences Success

  • Wedding DJ to $30 Million Founder | Steve Pastor’s journey with "Kings of Neon".
    May 27 2026

What does it really take to build a global brand from nothing?

In Episode 2 of A Life of Play, Israel Cannan sits down with entrepreneur and Kings of Neon founder Steve Pastor to unpack the journey from working as a wedding DJ to building a $30 million global ecommerce brand.

What began as a creative side hustle quickly evolved into one of Australia’s most recognisable custom neon brands - shipping products around the world, working with major celebrities and companies, and navigating the chaos that comes with rapid business growth.

But beneath the success is a deeper story about risk, obsession, identity, creativity, and the emotional rollercoaster of entrepreneurship.

In this conversation, Steve shares the realities of scaling a business from the ground up, the sacrifices that come with ambition, and the mindset shifts required to survive the pressure of modern entrepreneurship.

We also explore the importance of personal branding, building culture inside a fast-growing company, and why so many founders struggle once they finally “make it.”

What does it really mean to find flow in life?

In the first episode of A Life of Play, Israel Cannan sits down with former professional surfer Ace Buchan to explore the mindset behind peak performance, navigating life after elite sport, and the deeper philosophy of living with purpose.

Ace spent years competing on the World Surf League Championship Tour, chasing waves across the globe and learning what it takes to perform at the highest level. But like many elite athletes, his journey has also involved reinvention - transitioning from professional sport into business, family life, and raising the next generation.

In this conversation, Ace shares what surfing taught him about focus, resilience, and the elusive state of flow - the feeling when everything clicks and time seems to disappear.

We also dive into the challenges of parenting young athletes, supporting kids with big dreams, and helping them develop confidence without losing the joy of play.
