The story is set in 1930s Chicago and begins with an unusual framing device: the spirit of Mary Shelley (Jessie Buckley), speaking from the afterlife, laments that her original story was incomplete. She possesses the body of Ida, a high-spirited gangster's moll, whose sudden "possession" leads to a confrontation with mobsters and her subsequent death after falling down a flight of stairs. Meanwhile, Frank (Christian Bale)—Frankenstein’s monster, who has been lonely for over a century—arrives in the city seeking help from Dr. Cornelia Euphronius (Annette Bening). He asks her to create a companion for him. They recover Ida's body and, through a ritual of unnatural science and electricity, bring her back to life.

Ben can communicate using American Sign Language and a custom tablet soundboard.

Spike is forced into a brutal initiation—a death match against another member—and is renamed "Jimmy" as part of their collective identity.
