Meet the Storyteller I’m a lifelong lover of wildlife and nature, and I suppose I’ve always been a storyteller - perhaps I didn’t realise it until now. From a young age, nature was my sanctuary. I found joy in watching the change of the seasons, seeing the birds nesting in the garden, and occasionally catching a fleeting glimpse of foxes and badgers from my bedroom window at night. As I grew older, even when other priorities took precedence, I was always looking for the story in every situation, whether at work or with friends and family. No matter where I was or what was happening, I relished the opportunity to share my experiences with anyone willing to listen in the week that followed. Life took me on various adventures, as I am sure it has for you, and I didn’t have time for stories, spending my little bit of leisure time out in Nature with my kids when they were young. However, around five years ago, everything changed. With more time at home, many rediscovered old passions or embarked on new ones. One of my explorations was online storytelling. In the initial weeks, I listened and learned from storytellers not just here in the UK, but from around the globe – Canada, the US, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and even some voices from Africa. What a wonderful way to learn! I was captivated by how stories adapt and transform as they traverse the world, yet retain their central themes and key elements. I began to share my own stories, drawing from my passion for wildlife and the natural world, as well as from the rich folklore of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland – a seemingly endless source of inspiration and truly fascinating tales. From those early days online, I progressed to local clubs, groups, and events, eventually moving on to festivals and theatre. This journey led me to share my stories with you through a podcast. For me, audio is the true realm of storytelling. It allows for the creation of a rich tapestry, where each listener interprets the story uniquely. This thought is both powerful and inspiring. I love sharing stories, particularly our versions of traditional folklore from the UK and Ireland, but we also enjoy exploring global tales. We aim to highlight the often-hidden messages within these narratives, facilitating learning through the enjoyment of storytelling. In a world where nature and wildlife face significant threats from modern living, I strive daily to advocate for wildlife by weaving contemporary stories that engage people in the protection of our natural world. Sharing nature-based tales around a campfire is both motivating and stimulating, while also providing a sense of relaxation.Copyright 2026 Nigel Palmer Biological Sciences Science Social Sciences

This isn’t just any holiday tale; it’s steeped in Scandinavian tradition, where children never grow up and Christmas is an annual adventure.

The story evolves into a delightful juxtaposition when a wise old stranger proposes a more straightforward gift-giving method, leading to a Christmas Eve that doesn’t go as planned.

  • Starry Nights and Heartfelt Fights: Nature's Tales
    Nov 23 2025

We’ve got a couple of tales for you today that dive deep into the wild and the weird sides of our relationship with nature. First up, we’re taking a stroll through “The Magic of the Winter Sky,” where we’ll gaze at the stunning celestial show of stars and auroras lighting up a frosty Northern forest. It’s all about appreciating the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer, and trust me, it’s a real sight for sore eyes!

Then, we’re shifting gears to a more serious note with “Alfie’s Story,” a heart-wrenching narrative about the unjust treatment of XL Bully dogs, highlighting how some human decisions can lead to heartbreaking consequences for innocent animals. This story isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s crucial to raise awareness about empathy towards our four-legged friends who suffer from misguided legislation.

So, whether you want to bask in the beauty of a winter night or wrestle with some heavy truths, we’ve got something for you. Buckle up and let’s dive in!

The episode begins with a profound exploration of two distinct narratives, each highlighting the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world.

The first tale, titled “The Magic of the Winter Sky,” invites listeners to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the nocturnal landscape, where stars, constellations, and auroras create a tapestry of wonder in the frigid embrace of a Northern forest.

In our second story, we tackle a subject that may not be suitable for everyone, particularly younger children. Storytelling is a powerful way to share knowledge and wisdom, but it has also long been used to express our feelings about injustice and wrongdoings.

As a storyteller, it is essential to reflect on the events occurring around us, especially those that disturb us. That emotional energy motivates us to speak out and take action.

“Alfie’s Story” is a challenging narrative that I felt compelled to write due to the uncaring and thoughtless attitudes some people have toward our animal companions and wildlife in general.

Alfie is an XL Bully dog, and the government has passed a law condemning all dogs of this breed to death, labelling them as dangerous. This decision includes loyal companions and family members who have never posed a threat. It is an archaic and reprehensible choice.

“Alfie’s Story” will be shared after our main narrative, so you can choose whether or not to listen. Regardless of your decision, I truly appreciate your compassion and empathy. If you do choose to listen,

I hope you understand that “Alfie’s Story” emerges from a sense of injustice. Even if we don’t own an XL Bully, we can still feel the pain and suffering caused by such a decision. Like me, I’m sure you are dismayed by the lack of respect and understanding some people show towards animals and the natural world.

Alfie’s Story intends to raise awareness that humans are often the source of many problems, yet we seldom learn from our mistakes, and it is the animals and nature that suffer as a result. This situation is deeply wrong, and I passionately desire to see change. I dedicate this story to all the XL Bully dogs that have been needlessly put to sleep due to this decision.

    Takeaways:

    • The first Story presented, ‘The Magic of the Winter Sky,’ celebrates the enchanting beauty of Nature's nightscape, highlighting the wonder of stars and auroras.
    • In our second Story, ‘Alfie’s Story,’ we confront a deeply troubling narrative regarding the unjust treatment of certain dog breeds by societal legislation.
    • As storytellers, we recognise our responsibility to address issues of injustice through our narratives, reflecting on the world around us.
    • The plight of Alfie, an XL Bully dog, serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of human decisions on innocent lives.
    • We emphasise the importance of compassion and empathy towards all creatures, advocating...
