Episode 21 — When Refusal Becomes a Movement

Every movement begins with a choice. One person who refuses to remain silent. One voice that dares to say, "Enough."

But what happens when that single act of refusal becomes something greater?

In Episode 21 of Our Freedom's Edge, host Diane Bailey explores the extraordinary power of collective resistance—and how individual acts of courage can grow into movements capable of challenging injustice, confronting authoritarianism, and changing the course of history.

Throughout history, meaningful change has rarely come from those who quietly accepted the status quo. It has come from ordinary people who found the courage to question authority, reject complicity, and stand together against what they knew was wrong.

But resistance requires more than outrage. It demands conviction, persistence, sacrifice, and the willingness to act even when the consequences are uncomfortable.

At a time when democratic institutions are being tested and silence is too often mistaken for neutrality, the question is no longer simply whether we recognize what is happening around us.

The question is whether we are willing to do something about it.

Because one voice can break the silence. A thousand voices can shake the foundations of power. And a movement united by conscience can change a nation.

Refusal is where resistance begins. Solidarity is how it becomes a movement.

  • OFE, Episode 20 - A Music Trilogy
    Sep 29 2026

Episode 20 of Our Freedom’s Edge is our latest music trilogy, a chance to step back and hear the larger story behind the last three chapters of this journey.

We begin with The Cost of Looking Away, move into The Habit of Obedience, and arrive at The Courage to Refuse.

Together, these songs trace a progression that history has shown us again and again: first we look away, then silence becomes habit, and eventually we are faced with a choice—continue to comply, or find the courage to say no.

This episode brings those three songs together as one story about conscience, responsibility, and the moment when ordinary people decide they will no longer simply go along.

Because sometimes resistance begins with nothing more complicated than one person finally saying: No.

  • OFE, Episode 19, The Courage to Refuse
    Sep 15 2026

In this episode of Our Freedom’s Edge, we examine the courage to refuse.

Authoritarianism grows through silence, obedience, and the normalization of behavior we once would have condemned. The courage to refuse begins when we decide that loyalty to a person, party, or movement can never matter more than conscience, truth, and democracy.

Freedom can be surrendered one obedient decision at a time—and defended one refusal at a time.

Speak while you can speak. Stand while you can stand. Refuse while you can refuse.

    One NO at a time.

  • OFE, Episode 18 - Kinnley Weiser
    Sep 1 2026

This episode of Our Freedom’s Edge steps away from our usual path to celebrate a remarkable young woman from the small borough of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.

Kinnley Weiser is a junior at Selinsgrove Area High School — and the kicker for the Seals varsity football team.

She may simply see herself as a kid playing the sport she loves, but there is something bigger happening every time she walks onto that field. Kinnley is growing up with opportunities generations of women before her had to fight to make possible — and by simply showing up, doing the work, and taking her place on the team, she is helping move those possibilities forward for the girls who will come after her.

For those of us who remember when many of those doors were still firmly closed, watching a young woman like Kinnley walk through them means more than she may ever realize.

This episode is for Kinnley, for the girls following behind her — and for every generation that helped make that field a little wider.

And to all the Selinsgrove Seals fans out there, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Kinnley and the history she’s quietly making.

Episode 17: The Habit of Obedience

Obedience rarely begins with one dramatic surrender. It begins quietly — with one compromise, one uncomfortable silence, one moment when we decide it is easier to go along than to speak up.

In this episode of Our Freedom’s Edge, Diane Bailey examines how obedience becomes a habit, how the unacceptable slowly becomes normal, and what happens when we hand our conscience over to authority, political parties, institutions, or the crowd.

From military service and lawful orders to politics, loyalty, and everyday acts of silence, this episode asks a difficult question:

What have we gotten used to that once would have bothered us?

Because freedom is not always lost all at once. Sometimes it disappears one obedient decision at a time.

And preserving it may begin the same way — one refusal at a time.

Episode 16: The Cost of Looking Away

Years ago, while rushing to meet an important deadline in San Diego, I passed a homeless man who asked me for help. I said no and kept walking.

Later, I went back to look for him—but he was gone.

That moment has stayed with me ever since.

In this episode of Our Freedom’s Edge, I examine what happens when urgency, fear and convenience override our humanity. This is not a story about one man on one street. It is about the moments when we convince ourselves that someone else’s suffering is not our responsibility.

Human dignity cannot depend on whether someone is known to us. Tyranny survives when people stay silent, but cruelty also survives when ordinary people look away.

The question is not whether we have ever failed. Most of us have.

The question is what we do after we recognize it.

  • OFE, Episode 15, A music trilogy
    Jul 21 2026

Episode 15 of Our Freedom’s Edge brings together three original songs born from the questions at the heart of our most recent episodes: What are we becoming? How far will we keep moving the line of what we are willing to tolerate? And when do we finally say, “No more”?

This music trilogy confronts the slow normalization of injustice, the danger of silence, and the personal responsibility each of us carries when the unacceptable becomes ordinary. These songs are not simply reflections of where America is today. They are a warning, a reckoning, and a call to remember that every surrendered principle makes the next surrender easier.

Freedom is not lost only through laws, elections, or acts of force. Sometimes it disappears quietly—one excuse, one silence, and one moved line at a time.

  • OFE-Episode 14 - What Are We Willing to Accept
    Jul 7 2026

In this episode of Our Freedom’s Edge, Dr. Diane Bailey asks one of the most urgent questions of this moment: What are we willing to accept?

Every society has a line. A line between what is tolerable and what is not. A line between discomfort and danger. A line between disagreement and surrender. But that line does not move all at once. It moves slowly, quietly, one compromise at a time.

Episode 14 looks at how people, institutions, and nations begin to accept what they once would have condemned. It explores the danger of normalization, the cost of looking away, and the quiet ways power teaches people to lower their standards for justice, decency, and truth.

Diane also shares a deeply personal story from her early days working in law enforcement at the VA, when a secretary confided that the Chief of Police was sexually assaulting her and had targeted other women before her. As a new employee still on probation, Diane was afraid — but she could not accept a system that protected abuse and silence.

This episode is not about heroism. It is about conscience. It is about fear. It is about the moment when accepting the unacceptable becomes a choice.

Because the question is not only what they are doing.

The question is what we are willing to accept.
