Since the 2020 pseudo-white awakening to the realities of racial injustice following the killing of George Floyd, companies, organizations, and communities alike have been urgently (and performatively) working to make their spaces less white-dominated and more racially diverse.

The idea is that if more Black, Latine, and Indigenous people of color are represented in a space then *poof* social change has been achieved!

But in reality, diversity doesn’t always correlate with safety.

What happens when we strive to make a space more diverse but we use diversity and inclusion strategies as a:

• band-aid for systemic inequity issues
• way to appease marginalized folks or
• means to appear less racist or oppressive

without considering whether folks will actually be protected from the harmful impacts of oppression?

In this episode, you will learn about the problems with focusing on diversity, how you can start shifting towards a restorative justice framework that considers deeper questions, and three ways you can begin cultivating true safety in your communities of influence.

An essential part of building an anti-oppressive world and living out your justice values is your ability to acknowledge & correct your mistakes when you cause harm by participating in the oppression of marginalized people.

But because it is often difficult to distinguish accountability mechanisms from a modern witch-hunt or a true-crime drama, we typically fail to practice accountability appropriately, if at all.

Without justice-centered accountability practices, the harm that Black, queer, and other marginalized people experience as a result of inequity goes unchecked and unchanged. Or worse, it replicates.

So what does it really mean to be accountable for harm (both proactively and reactively) and how can you start using this practice as a tool to disrupt white supremacy and other systems of oppression?
