  • Diversity Doesn’t Mean Safety
    Jul 5 2022

Since the 2020 pseudo-white awakening to the realities of racial injustice following the killing of George Floyd, companies, organizations, and communities alike have been urgently (and performatively) working to make their spaces less white-dominated and more racially diverse.

The idea is that if more Black, Latine, and Indigenous people of color are represented in a space then *poof* social change has been achieved!

But in reality, diversity doesn’t always correlate with safety.

What happens when we strive to make a space more diverse but we use diversity and inclusion strategies as a:

    • band-aid for systemic inequity issues
    • way to appease marginalized folks or
    • means to appear less racist or oppressive

without considering whether folks will actually be protected from the harmful impacts of oppression?

In this episode, you will learn about the problems with focusing on diversity, how you can start shifting towards a restorative justice framework that considers deeper questions, and three ways you can begin cultivating true safety in your communities of influence.

If you want help advancing justice in your own communities of influence without relying on performative diversity efforts, I'd love to support you in this work through my 1:1 consulting program Activate Your Advocacy Academy.

Together we can get clear on what it means to create safe & equitable conditions in any community space where you're a member & what your unique role is in this work.

  • Your Anti-Oppression Is Incomplete Without Accountability
    Jun 7 2022

An essential part of building an anti-oppressive world and living out your justice values is your ability to acknowledge & correct your mistakes when you cause harm by participating in the oppression of marginalized people.

But because it is often difficult to distinguish accountability mechanisms from a modern witch-hunt or a true-crime drama, we typically fail to practice accountability appropriately, if at all.

Without justice-centered accountability practices, the harm that Black, queer, and other marginalized people experience as a result of inequity goes unchecked and unchanged. Or worse, it replicates.

So what does it really mean to be accountable for harm (both proactively and reactively) and how can you start using this practice as a tool to disrupt white supremacy and other systems of oppression?

If you want to avoid the mistakes I discuss in this episode and you’re committed to becoming more accountable in your racial justice efforts, join me for a 2-day virtual learning experience 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙇𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 so you can learn:

    • How to identify your role in Black liberation work so your advocacy action can feel authentic to your strengths & who you are
    • How to identify when harmful and oppressive behavior is happening so you can stop or challenge it
    • How to prevent and effectively repair the harm caused by white supremacy & other systems of oppression so you can help build communities that are safer for Black and other marginalized folks

  • All Justice Ain't Real Justice
    May 17 2022

Our criminal justice system in the United States claims to dispense justice when violence or harm happens, but if we recognize that real fairness and freedom is NOT available to all of us under this system- then it's time RETHINK justice as you know it.

Without critically examining the lessons you’ve been taught about justice, you run the risk of supporting & enabling the type of 'justice' that actually undermines racial equity and furthers harm to other marginalized people.

In today's episode, I'm breaking down the 3 faces of justice, what their goals are, and what their impacts are so you can start to recognize them in your own community and relationships.

If you want to you want to learn how to pursue racial justice in your daily life through principles of real justice, join me for a 2-day virtual learning experience 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙇𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 so you can confidently disrupt racial injustice without the overwhelming or performative advocacy action.
