In 1968, Erich von Däniken popularized a startling reading of the relief: Pakal, he argued, appeared to be an astronaut operating a spacecraft. The angled figure, apparent controls, projection near the face, and forms beneath the body have made the image one of the most recognizable artifacts in ancient-astronaut literature.
Yet the lid came from a carefully constructed Maya royal tomb. Scholars including Mary Ellen Miller, along with the Penn Museum’s examination of the claim, interpret the carving through Palenque’s inscriptions, funerary architecture, and Maya imagery of royal death, renewal, maize-god associations, the underworld, and the World Tree.
This episode follows the concealed stairway, the years of excavation, the chamber discovery, the burial context, von Däniken’s publication, the Copán caption discrepancy, and the evidence behind two competing readings of one extraordinary image.
