Parallel 34

We're 34 years apart — same world, completely different lens on it. I'm Derek, and Delaney's my daughter. Every week we sit down and talk through whatever is on our minds — screen time, friendships, how we each see the world — and try to actually understand how the other person sees it, not just wait our turn to talk.

Some weeks it's lighthearted. Some weeks we end up somewhere deeper than we expected. Delaney's proof that "kid" and "person with real things to say" aren't mutually exclusive — we've always talked to her like she's capable of a real conversation, and this podcast is kind of the result of that.

New episodes weekly. Come see the world through two lenses.

We hit record without a strict plan and let real life set the agenda, starting with the most relatable opener possible: we can’t even agree what episode number we’re on. From there, we talk about why our schedule slid a little, what it looks like to aim for a weekly podcast, and how we’re fine letting “random catch-up” turn into the theme when the conversation gets good.

Derek shares highlights from a short Las Vegas trip, including his first time on a plane in about 26 years, staying on Fremont Street under the LED canopy, and doing a little gambling (yes, there’s one win and an overall loss). We also talk about checking out the Mob Museum, the difference between blackjack and roulette, and what it’s like being a Chiefs fan surrounded by Raiders fans who are surprisingly polite and ready for friendly trash talk.

Then we switch gears to school life: field trips, a science YouTuber show with a balloon chain lifted by a leaf blower, and Mission Moon where Delaney flies drones, builds a rover, and works inside a dome space where even whispers carry. We wrap with band updates like learning “Hot Cross Buns,” how memorizing music for marching band actually works, volleyball starting soon, a few family health updates, and Halloween plans featuring matching monster onesies.

If you like family podcasts, casual storytelling, and the kind of conversations that sound like the ride home from school, press play. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so Parallel34 can keep growing week by week.

  • Yep, We Recorded A Podcast Anyway
    Sep 28 2026

“It’s kind of an episode about nothing” sounds like a joke until you realize how much truth fits inside ordinary days. We sit down on a gloomy, rainy stretch and just talk, the way real families actually talk, bouncing from one small moment to the next and finding the meaning hiding in plain sight.

We start with the fun stuff: birthday parties, including a play-by-play of Slick City and the slides that are equal parts scary and awesome. Then we shift into fifth grade life, from a fall party to what’s happening in class right now. We get into learning volume in math, playing alto sax in band, early choir routines, and even an art project that somehow involves mozzarella sticks, fries, ice cream, and Dr Pepper. It’s a snapshot of school life that parents recognize instantly and kids can laugh along with.

The biggest thread is growing up. We talk honestly about being excited for middle school while also feeling nervous about new teachers, new routines, and friends possibly going different directions. That leads into lunch options, “big kid” food, and what daily life feels like at 10 years old, including the simple answer that happiness often comes down to friends, family, and personality. Add a neighborhood cat sighting, a possum under the shed, and a few behind-the-scenes mic and camera struggles, and you’ve got a true father daughter podcast conversation with zero polish and a lot of heart.

  • The Episode That Tried Not To Record
    Sep 14 2026

The cameras glitch, the backlight turns everything purple, and we’re somehow recording Episode 2 for the third time while it’s storming outside. That ends up being the perfect tone for a real family podcast: a little chaotic, a little funny, and surprisingly honest.

We start with what life actually looks like right now: band practice on alto sax, choir getting going, and the school testing schedule that always seems to pop up. From there, we talk about a birthday trip to Adventureland that gets cut short by storms after one big milestone, a first roller coaster that’s “terrifying, but fun.” That theme park moment turns into a bigger parenting conversation about independence, rules, and why kids often have to stay close in crowded places even if they feel ready to explore.

Then we get into the heart of it: what “freedom” should mean for a 10-year-old today. We compare the kind of neighborhood independence parents remember having with the reality of modern safety concerns, and we talk about how phones, iPads, and smartwatches change the way kids communicate and the way parents make decisions. We even take a quick detour into college football chaos and a controversial extra second that leads to a Hail Mary win.

If you’re thinking about parenting boundaries, kids and smartphones, screen time spillover, and how to gradually build trust, this conversation will hit home. Subscribe, share this with another parent, and leave a review, what’s one freedom you think kids should earn earlier than most adults allow?
