  • EP 53: Transformations of the Notions of Marriage
    Oct 6 2026

In this episode of Pathways with Joseph Campbell, we hear Campbell’s lecture "Transformations of the Notions of Marriage", part of the Joseph Campbell Foundation’s Collected Audio.

Campbell traces a profound shift in the Western understanding of love and marriage, beginning with the troubadours of 12th- and 13th-century Europe and the emergence of romantic love as a challenge to socially arranged marriage. Through the stories of Tristan and Isolde, the Arthurian romances, and the Grail legend, he explores the tension between love and duty, social convention and individual experience.

At the heart of the lecture is an idea that runs throughout Campbell’s work: the importance of living authentically from what the medieval poets called the “gentle” or “noble” heart—a life guided not simply by inherited rules and expectations, but by the experience of being fully alive.

  • EP 52: The Occidental Tradition part 3
    Sep 1 2026

In this final installment of The Occidental Tradition, recorded during Joseph Campbell’s 1973 visit to the Blaisdell Institute, Campbell turns toward the role of myth, symbol, and ritual in modern Western life.

In a wide-ranging and conversational exchange, Campbell explores the symbolic traditions embedded in Christianity, art, American history, and even the imagery of the dollar bill. He reflects on the gradual disappearance of shared ritual in modern culture, the enduring human need for ceremonies of belonging and transformation, and what can happen when that need is left without meaningful forms.

From the funeral of John F. Kennedy and the rituals of political life to football games, protest movements, religious imagery, and the work of artists and visionaries, Campbell argues that our symbolic inheritance has not entirely disappeared. The symbols, he suggests, are still all around us—we have simply forgotten how to see them.

In his closing commentary, host Bradley Olson considers what it means to live among the remnants of older symbolic worlds, and whether myth can still help us give form to the mysteries of death, grief, love, belonging, and the experience of being alive.

  • EP 51: The Occidental Tradition part 2
    Aug 4 2026

In Part Two of The Occidental Tradition, recorded at the Blaisdell Institute in 1973, this episode features Joseph Campbell leading an informal and wide-ranging discussion on education, mythology, and the Occidental tradition.

Campbell begins with the sacred syllable Om, exploring waking consciousness, dreams, and the silence that lies behind words and images. He describes dreams as a personal entrance into the world of myth, where individual experience opens onto larger, universal patterns.

He also recounts a remarkable mythological wedding ceremony held in the volcanic landscape of Iceland. Drawing upon Norse symbolism, ritual, music, movement, and the natural environment, the ceremony becomes an example of how mythology can be lived rather than merely studied.

The conversation then turns toward education and Campbell’s belief that Western students should encounter Eastern traditions while also developing a deeper understanding of their own cultural inheritance. He emphasizes the Occidental tradition’s focus on individual responsibility, the discovery of one’s unique path, and the courage to enter the unknown.

Host Bradley Olson offers an introduction and commentary, providing historical context for this spontaneous and revealing conversation.
