  • #15 Crisis Without Courage
    Jan 30 2026

James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States, entered office as the nation was splitting apart and left it even more divided than it had been before. A lifelong politician and the only unmarried president, Buchanan believed the Constitution did not grant him the power to prevent states from seceding, a decision that defined his presidency. His time in office was marked by weak leadership, deep sectional conflict, and a failure to confront the growing crisis over slavery. By the time he left the White House in 1861, the country was on the brink of civil war, and Buchanan’s legacy was largely shaped by what he did not do.

  • #12 Rough And Ready, Not For Cherries...
    Jan 23 2026

Zachary Taylor was one of America’s toughest generals, yet his presidency ended in one of the strangest ways imaginable. Rising from the Kentucky frontier to national fame in the Mexican-American War, Taylor entered the White House with no political experience and found himself at the center of the growing civil crisis. Though a slave owner, he opposed the expansion of slavery and threatened force against secession, placing him awkwardly between North and South. His sudden death after just sixteen months in office cleared the path for the Compromise of 1850, making Taylor less a shaper of history and more a quiet turning point before the storm.
