  • Liam's Train
    Apr 23 2022

When our son Liam was little, I asked him what kind of song he wanted me to write for him. He said he wanted to go on a trip. He wanted to ride planes, trains, and automobiles, and go on an adventure. He even helped me get the song started at times---i can still hear his adorable voice, saying, "Here, We, Go! " to the rhythm of the intro.

My Dad always played songs on his guitar growing up--and many of them had a train in them, sort of a Johnny Cash feel, with a Spanish flair. I also often heard the sound of the trains on the tracks a couple miles away from my childhood home, lulling me to sleep at night, accompanied by those old songs my Dad would sing. "Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance..." says Paul Simon. That was true for me.

This song became a story of a confident, willful, stubborn young man, out to find his way in the world--and finding out it's not as easy as it looks. But when there is a will, there is a way, and having a bit of stubborn optimism and bravery can take you places, where you'll do things you didn't know you could.

  • It's Christmas
    Dec 24 2021

There was a time years ago, I was taught the meaning of Christmas. It was when we had little in terms of material wealth, and the car i was driving broke down on the side of a main highway. The car broke down all the time--we didn't have the funds to fix it properly, and I usually just hoped the car would get me to work every day. By some miracle, it always did. The car always would restart. But this day, it didn't. So I walked. It was a long walk, and as I made my way home, the tune, and the words of this song came to me. I thought I had nothing to give others that Christmas. I wouldn't be able to afford the gifts I wished I could give to friends and family. "What can i give?" I thought. Then, I realized that childlike belief led to bearing light, truth, love, and using the less tangible gifts I had been given to uplift others was what I could give to my Savior Jesus Christ. These gifts could be both given, and received at Christmas, and always.
