The carol "O Little Town of Bethlehem" was written in 1868 by Episcopal priest Phillips Brooks after he visited Bethlehem on Christmas Eve in 1865. Inspired by the peaceful atmosphere and the hymns sung in the Church of the Nativity, he wrote the lyrics for the children in his Philadelphia Sunday school.
