Ep 2 | Beyond the Credentials: Ed Hiner on Building Trust and Translating Military Experience
    Oct 15 2026
During this episode of Rally Point Actual, Nick Rinnell and Tommy Hendler, both active duty military, sit down with Ed Hiner, a retired Navy SEAL (LCDR), two-time McGraw Hill author ("First Fast, Fearless" and "GUTS"), and CEO of The Hiner Group. Given Ed's success in his personal transition - not without challenges - several actionable ideas unfold throughout the conversation.

    Leadership Principles
    • Ed emphasized character and the “mission, others, me” model: prioritize the mission, then people, then yourself.
    • In uncertain, high-pressure situations, leaders should act with purpose rather than become paralyzed by excessive information; leadership and decision-making skills matter beyond credentials alone.
    Veteran Value
    • Veterans can build civilian trust through time and attention, respect, unbreakable values, sacrifice, and technical proficiency.
    • Ed urged veterans to explain the complexity and broader impact of their experience, using civilian mentors to help translate it for employers.
    Transition Approach
    • Ed described transition as an ongoing process. Veterans should expect to miss the military’s community and sense of purpose, then create new meaning through action and planning.
    • His closing message: recognize the significance of service, keep developing, and find a meaningful mission and community aligned with your values.
    Translating Military Experience
    • Veterans should explain the decision-making, ethical judgment, negotiation, and leadership behind their roles, not focus only on technical qualifications or combat skills.
    • Civilian mentors can help veterans recognize and communicate the value of their experience. Ed noted that organizations may seek veterans’ knowledge without properly valuing or compensating it.
    • Ed’s trust model includes time and attention, respect, unbreakable values, sacrifice, and technical proficiency.
    Transition and Purpose
    • Ed described transition as stressful because veterans leave a familiar community, clear mission, and support structure.
    • He recommended taking action, making plans, and maintaining basic well-being to work through fear of the unknown.
    • He encouraged veterans to find a new mission and people who share their values.
