  • Mark Ramsey: An Inside Look at Cabrillo Athletics
    Sep 23 2026

Santa Cruz is an incredible place to play college sports, and it might be the hardest place to recruit for the exact same reason: housing. We sit down with Mark Ramsey, the athletic director at Cabrillo College, to get a clear-eyed look at what it actually takes to run and grow a community college athletics department and why the next few years could be a turning point for the Cabrillo Seahawks.

We talk about what “success” really means when a football program is rebuilding, how coaches keep athletes motivated when wins are hard to come by, and why the community college mission is bigger than the scoreboard. Mark breaks down the reality of supporting 15 sports with a lean staff, showing up on game days, creating an atmosphere for athletes, and helping players navigate the academic side so they can transfer and keep moving forward.

Then we get into the big shifts happening right now: Cabrillo’s upcoming student housing, what it could do for recruiting local and out-of-area student athletes, and how affordability changes the whole pitch. We also tackle NIL at the community college level, including what athletes can do, what schools cannot do, and why contracts, taxes, and long-term terms matter more than most people realize.

If you care about Santa Cruz County sports, California community college football and recruiting, student athlete development, or the future of Cabrillo College athletics, this conversation delivers. Subscribe, share this with a student athlete or parent, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway.

  • Bernie Escalante: Santa Cruz Police Chief
    Sep 17 2026

Crime can be trending down on paper while feeling out of control in your feed, and that tension is exactly where this conversation lives. We’re joined by soon to be retiring Santa Cruz Police Chief Bernie Escalante, a local kid turned leader, to talk about what public safety looks like when every incident can be filmed, posted, and judged before the facts are even collected.

We get into the big issues Santa Cruz residents argue about the most: homelessness, substance abuse, and the shift from “organic” drugs to synthetic fentanyl and meth. Bernie explains what officers see on the street, why addiction and psychosis can make rational help feel impossible in the moment, and how policing becomes the default response to social problems because it’s the only service that runs 24/7. We also talk about crime statistics versus public perception, and why social media misinformation can spiral faster than any department can realistically respond.

Then we tackle the controversial stuff head-on: AB 481 and the debate over “militarized equipment,” including how state definitions can classify everyday tools in surprising ways. Bernie also shares what he wants his legacy to be, especially around supporting officer mental health and wellness, from better internal resources to small changes that help people decompress after hard calls. We close with the reality of hiring and why recruiting police officers takes time, money, and patience.

If you care about Santa Cruz, community policing, and what actually improves public safety, listen through and share it with someone who only sees the headlines. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what topic you want next.

A handshake used to carry weight. Lately, we’re seeing the opposite, and it’s not just a “people these days” rant. We start with what’s happening inside our real estate world as our company grows, what we learned at a shareholder meeting, and why scaling a team only works when you stop pretending you can be CEO, recruiter, ops and marketing all at once. The culture piece matters, because if you lose it, the numbers don’t mean much.

Then the conversation turns personal. We talk ego, being the face of a brand, and the quiet stress that shows up when business is good but expectations get heavier. Loyalty comes up for a reason: we’ve watched people get help for years and then flip the script the moment they don’t get instant access or constant attention. If you’re building a business in Santa Cruz or anywhere else, boundaries are part of survival.

The most important section is family and money. We’ve seen real estate and inheritance rip families apart, and it usually starts with silence: no will, no trust, no clear wishes, and no plan for what happens when siblings want different outcomes. We share practical steps to start the conversation early, reduce probate pain, and protect generational wealth. We also break down portfolio performance and triple net lease investing (NNN) as one path to stronger passive income, plus a quick teaser on major industry changes brewing around MLS control.

If this hit home, subscribe, share it with someone who needs the nudge, and leave a review. What’s one money conversation you’ve been avoiding?
