Chelsie was not trying to become an emergency manager. She was looking for a stable job when she accepted an evening administrative position at her local hospital. One paramedic ride-along later on a helicopter - changed everything for her!

That one experience launched a career spanning more than two decades in emergency medical services, hospital operations, emergency preparedness, and leadership. Along the way, she became the EMS Hospital Liaison during one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare ... the COVID...19 pandemic ... and today serves as the Manager of Emergency Preparedness for Reading Hospital.

Picture this...a high school student in Brandon, Manitoba, working as a lifeguard part-time and loving the exposure to life-saving through Red Cross training. She picks up a pamphlet about paramedicine. Yes, an actual paper pamphlet, because this was before the web - and she decides to take an emergency medical course while still in high school.

One course. One shiny fire truck. And just like that...she found her calling.

That decision launched a remarkable career spanning more than twenty-five years in the fire service.

Sarah Peto became just the second woman ever hired by Brandon Fire & Emergency Services, helping pave the way for the women who would follow. Today she serves as Acting Captain, is the first woman to serve on Brandon Fire's executive team, and in 2023 founded Fire Service Women Central Provinces (FSWCP), creating a network that connects, supports, and elevates women across the Prairies and Central Canada. https://www.fswcp.ca/
