The Ambulance Made Two Trips by Murray Leinster is a clever and entertaining science-fiction story that mixes crime, mystery, humor, and one very unusual scientific idea.
Detective Sergeant Fitzgerald knows exactly who is causing trouble in town. Powerful racketeer Big Jake Connors has built his influence through intimidation, violence, and corruption, yet the police have little they can use against him. Connors and his men appear almost untouchable—until they choose the wrong small business to threaten.
When a local establishment refuses to cooperate with the gangsters, strange accidents begin happening. Plans that should be simple suddenly go wrong. Threats backfire, unlikely coincidences appear at exactly the right moment, and Fitzgerald begins to suspect that something far stranger than ordinary resistance is working against Big Jake.
His investigation leads him toward Brink and an extraordinary device capable of influencing probability. What begins as a familiar battle between law enforcement and organized crime soon turns into a wonderfully imaginative question: what would happen if science could make bad intentions extraordinarily difficult to carry out?
Murray Leinster combines the atmosphere of a classic crime story with speculative science fiction, creating a short tale that is suspenseful, humorous, and surprisingly inventive.
The Ambulance Made Two Trips is an excellent audiobook for listeners who enjoy vintage science fiction, unusual inventions, crime stories, clever twists, and imaginative “what if?” scenarios.
A fast-moving classic from one of the pioneering voices of twentieth-century science fiction.
