"When was the last time you felt lonely?"

He'd just come back from a waterfall. It was beautiful — and that was exactly the problem. There was no one there to share it with, no one to point out the small things to. Solo travel gives you freedom, but it takes that away.

He walked me through what he actually does when the loneliness hits. Four things, and the last one is the best: do something that brings you back to yourself. Music, dancing, whatever you're passionate about. Something that reminds you who you are.

He called it going back home.

  • "I carried my friend while he died...."
    Sep 4 2026

At 19, he was serving in the army when his best friend was killed. He carried him as he was dying. He couldn't save him.

But as he tells it, that wasn't the hardest part. The hardest part came at the funeral, walking up to his friend's mother and saying "I'm sorry I didn't do better."

In this conversation he opens up about grief, guilt, counseling, and what it did to his relationship with death — and he shares something that stayed with me: he's never really talked about any of this. Not with his family. Not with his friends. Not because he doesn't want to, but because nobody has the courage to ask.

That's what this whole project is about. The conversations we avoid are usually the ones that need having.
